About the Author

Jeffrey T. Fairbrother is an associate professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on motor learning and control and a graduate course on expert performance in sports. His research focuses on the effects that factors related to the performance setting (such as practice schedules) have on the performance and learning of motor skills. He established a collaborative agreement with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine to investigate the effectiveness of self-controlled feedback on marksmanship training. In addition to his laboratory-based research, his scholarly publications include an article on the forensic analysis of a collapsed portable playpen that killed a child and an article on the take-off maneuver in the sport of surfing. Dr. Fairbrother is an active member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, and he chaired the Motor Learning/Control Program Committee for their 2006 annual meeting. He also serves as a section editor in motor learning and control for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.

 

Dr. Fairbrother earned a PhD in movement science with a specialization in motor behavior from FloridaState University, an MS in physical education from CaliforniaPolytechnicStateUniversity, and a BA in English form the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Great text and great value

This is a perfect text for introductory courses on motor behavior. It is especially valuable for programs where students do not focus on motor behavior but could benefit from knowing the principles. Programs that prepare future physical therapists, coaches, athletic trainers, etc. will especially find it useful. It is very readable and lacks the density that makes many of the other texts so daunting for students not familiar with the field. The best part is that it is not only a great text but substantially more affordable than most other textbooks on the subject. I am a fan in every way!

About the Author

Sandy Hagenbach, MS, is a teacher at Heritage Elementary School in De Pere, Wisconsin. She has taught grades K-6 since 1978 and was named Wisconsin AHPERD Elementary Teacher of the Year in 2009. She also received the Golden Apple Award for innovative use of literature in physical education and is certified in adapted physical education. As part of the Wisconsin State Standards team, she helped write, Wisconsin’s learning priorities.

A Kohl education fellowship recipient in 2010, Hagenbach enjoys golf, swimming, and Nordic walking. Raising a son with autism has influenced Sandy’s teaching and has given her a unique perspective on teaching responsible behavior.

Every fairy and sparrow man in Pixie Hollow had received the same invitation. It was handwritten on linen in blackberry juice.

It was going to be the biggest celebration Pixie Hollow had seen in a long time. So, on the day of the party, the Home Tree was abuzz with activity. The Never fairies went all out getting ready to celebrate the Arrival Day of their beloved queen, Clarion, whose nickname was Ree.

In the kitchen, on the ground floor of the Home Tree, the cooking- and baking-talent fairies were whipping up the seven-course royal Arrival Day dinner. The menu included dandelion leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts, and spices; oven-roasted minipumpkin soup; and potpies filled with dwarf mushrooms and mouse Brie. Dulcie, a baking-talent fairy, was churning out batch after batch of her specialty, the most delicious poppy puff rolls in all of Never Land. And for dessert, she made a ten-layer raspberry-vanilla cake with buttercream frosting.

Meanwhile, the polishing-talent fairies were hard at work in the Home Tree lobby and the dining hall. Every brass plate, every doorknob, mirror, window latch, and marble floor tile was polished until the fairies could see their reflections just about everywhere they looked.

The decoration-talent fairies and the celebration-setup fairies zipped about the dining hall. They moved the tables and chairs. They draped the tables with gold tablecloths and delicate lacy spiderwebs. They sprinkled flower-petal confetti on every table and across the floor. They hung colorful balloons in the arched doorway.

The light-talent fairies did double duty. Some of them set up the firefly lanterns that would fill the room with thousands of dancing points of light. Others did a practice run of the light show they would perform for the queen at the party. They skillfully flared and dimmed their fairy glows to create a dazzling display.

The sewing-talent fairies were putting the finishing touches on the queen’s dress. It was a full-length masterpiece of the finest silk, decorated with pale pink rose petals, the softest green leaves, and freshwater pearls.

Even Tinker Bell, a member of the pots-and-pans talent, was helping out. The cooking-talent fairies needed every pot and pan they could get their hands on. So Tinker Bell had risen early that morning. She finished fixing all the broken pots in her workshop on the second floor of the Home Tree. Then she returned them all, making several trips between her workshop and the kitchen.

On her last trip down to the kitchen, Tink met up with her friend Rani, a water-talent fairy. Rani had been working in the kitchen all morning long. She was using her talent to help out with lots of little tasks, like getting the water to boil faster on the stove.

“Rani!” Tink called. “Do you have time for a break?”

Rani looked around the kitchen. Things seemed to be running smoothly. She didn’t think she’d be missed if she stepped out for a few minutes.

“Yes,” Rani replied. “I do have time. Let’s go out back and whistle for Brother Dove. Maybe he can fly us down to the beach.”

Rani did not have wings, you see. She was the only Never fairy who didn’t. She had given them up to save Mother Dove’s egg–and Pixie Hollow itself. Ever since then, Brother Dove had been her wings. Whenever she wanted or needed to fly somewhere, Rani just whistled for him, and Brother Dove came to her.

Tinker Bell and Rani left the kitchen through the back door. They stepped out into the late-morning sunshine. It was a
glorious, clear day.

Tink took a deep breath of fresh air. “It’s going to be a beautiful–”

“–evening,” said Rani, finishing the thought. She had a habit of finishing
others’ sentences. “The perfect night for a party.”

Just then, there was a rustling in the brush overhead. Both Tink and Rani jumped.

“Is it a hawk?” Rani cried in alarm. Hungry hawks were the greatest threats to the Never fairies’ safety.

Instinctively, Tink flew in front of Rani, shielding her. She strained her eyes and gazed up into the brush. She wanted to get a better look.

Then, as she made out the shape of a fairy among the leaves, Tinker Bell relaxed. She put her hands on her hips.

“That’s no hawk,” Tink said with a laugh. “It’s Vidia.”

This is one of three fairy books that I bought for my granddaughter for her birthday. She loves and believes in fairies and hopes to have some move into the fairy house I made her. I am sure she loves this book since she requested all three books I have reviewed.

I love it!

I'm only seven and I still read this book [mom is transcribing review]. My favorite part in the book is when she was looking in this cave and found the fairy crown! My favorite girl in that book was Prilla. Why I liked her is because she is really nice and very pretty. I loved the pictures in this book. I so loved the book! I wish Vidia would have smiled more than two times.

It's not really long enough, but hey, it's a kids book!

I got this book for mainly one reason: I absolutely adore the character of Jane. She's my favorite Disney character of all time. This book is good enough if you like the film a lot, but a lot of key scenes are missing here, such as Jane building a raft. And the pictures are a mixed bag: Some of them are beautiful, while others have the chracters making dumb faces and stuff. All in all, worth it if you like the movie, and it's a great book for children. And if you like Jane as much as I do (which you probably don't), this is a must-read.

Mirrors the movie, and still tells most if the story. This is a genuine Peter Pan story. Doesn't feel like a cheap sequel. It is as good as Peter Pan.

I love the movie UP and wanted to be reminded of the story, the characters, and the colors. This book's colors are awful/dull. It left out my favorite parts of the movie/story. And it was told in such a boring way that I did not care about the characters.

A Great Reference

This book would be a wonderful asset for a first time youth baseball coach as well as a veteran. It presents several drills and skills that build upon one another. It also goes over scheduling, rostering and time management as well as the importance of fun for the kids. I would recommend this book to any youth baseball coach.

A Must Have For All Coaches

The Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Baseball is a must have for coaches and parents at all levels of baseball. Dan Keller provides the knowledge to immediately create an incredible baseball experience for players of all ages and ability levels. I am a Special Education teacher, high school coach, and parent of a 10 year old athlete so I have a very critical eye on coaching methods and instructional techniques. Dan is "hands-down" the most talented coach I have seen work with baseball players and consider it a privilege to have access to him in person. For those that do not, this book lays out the blueprint for success in re-creating what Dan has refined over thousands of hours of lessons and clinics. I have implemented Dan's coaching methodologies with my Little League, Pony, and Travelball teams and have maintained a winning average regardless of the "talent" of the squad. In short, Dan Keller has figured out how to create a baseball program that produces winning results, engages the "whole" athlete, and creates a true love for the game of baseball.

All Mentors read this BOOK

Having played baseball for 18 years in Cincinnati. having been on traveling baseball teams, having been on state highschool runner up teams. I have seen first hand what a great coach can do with youth ball players. This book is intended to be highlighted and shared from coach to coach, from player to player. Without a doubt this book describes what all coaches should be sharing with youthfull kids. Key phrases like two hands, fun, defence first offense second, errors are going to happen, help over come fear etc.. this is what coaching is all about at a young age. It is letting kids be kids, but coaching and developing them into young respectfull men of the game. Dan has really done his homework on this topic and it is a winner in my book. I am sharing this book as we speak to neighbors and friends. it is good to see that a book is intended for both a vetren coach and a new parent just entering the spot light of volunteering. Take this book and read it, then go over it again. Use this book to build weekly workouts, use this book as a refrence, use this book as a guide. anyway you look at it, it is benificial.

I think that the book could of been a little more exciting. The beginning of the book started out of nowhere by him saying, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling." Through the book I felt bad for Chicken Little because everyone made fun of him. He caused panic in the town of Oakey Oaks when he rang the bell and everyone ran around scared. The beginning really kept my attention but the middle was not exciting. I did like the meaning of the story when he discovers, it's a good thing to be a little chicken.

About the Author
Associate Professor of Science Education, University of South Florida Dr. Malcolm Butler's teaching and research addresses multicultural issues in the classroom. He has worked to support typically underserved student populations and has interest in the areas of writing to learn in science, science content for elementary teachers, and coastal and environmental education professional development for teachers. He has written and contributed to many academic journal articles including "The Invisible Science Educator," presented at the 2007 National Science Foundation conference.

Director of Teacher Education, Illinois Institute of Technology Dr. Judith Lederman has taught science in classrooms ranging from pre-K science to graduate level education courses and post-graduate professional development workshops. Dr. Lederman is known nationally and internationally for her work in the teaching and learning of Scientific Inquiry in both formal and informal settings. In 2008, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to work with a South African university, museum educators, and K-12 science teachers in the area of Scientific Inquiry and Nature of Science. Judith served on the Board of Directors of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and as President of the Council for Elementary Science International (CESI).

Associate Professor of Science Education, Ohio State University Dr. Kathy Trundle currently teaches master's and doctoral level courses in science education. She studies children's and adult's understandings of Earth and space science concepts, and she has been very active in the development of sciencce teacher education programs. Dr. Trundle was the recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Science Teacher Educator of the Year presented by the Association for Science Teacher Education, an international organization.

Professor of Teacher Education and Educational Psychology, Michigan State University Dr. Nell Duke's research and teaching focuses primarily on young children--pre-kindergarten through grade two. She is particularly interested in how young children learn to comprehend informational text and what teachers can do to facilitate that process. Dr. Duke has received awards for her research from the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Reading Conference, and the American Educational Research Association. Not really a step, but a leap

Essentially, this book is not a step into reading - unless you are thinking of it as a BIG step. Its an easy, simple book to read for a 5 year old, but the words are to large and complex for a beginner and it takes a considerable amount of more effort for the child to do it - and that with assistance - that if your goal is to make them feel confident in their reading ability, delay this princess book for a later time.

I ordered this to go with a Snow White costume, also ordered from Amazon. This book completes the BDay gift for my 5 year old GDaughter. The book has a sweet story and is well made. The illustrations look traditional Disney to me, very classic. The words might be a little more difficult for a Step 1 book, but she will have them memorized after a couple of readings anyway! The book was delivered quickly and in perfect condition.

much more difficult than other Step 1 readers in this series

we've purchased several of the Step into Reading Step 1 readers for our 4.5 year old who is moving out of the BOB book series. this particular book is much more difficult than Big Egg, I Like Bugs, Hot Dog and some others that we have tried. The sentences are much more complex and the majority of words are sight words and not "sound it out" words. I will put this book away until my reader graduates to Scholastic Step 1 readers.

Good Adaptation of the Movie

This book is a pretty good adaptation of the movie. Considering the wild visual action and humor of the movie, the author did a a decent job of describing them for the book. A great read for kids of all ages.

Tinkerbell and the great fairy rescue

After reading this book I'm sure that this will be the September release DVD will be the best of the Tink movies yet. Tinkerbell and the other fairies are camping on the mainland and when humans move into their summer cottage she becomes interested in how their car works. Despite Vidia's objections she goes to check out a little fairy doll house made by the human girl Lizzy and get trapped inside and taken to Lizzie's room. Because of rain Tinkerbell can't go home right away but seeing how much Lizzy loves fairies and is curious to know more she's happy to stay. Especially if she can help bring Liz and her dad closer together. Meanwhile Vidia and the others built a boat to go find Tinkerbell and bring her home. One of the most interesting facts is we learn that while the fairies sound normal to one another Tinkerbell makes the bell sound heard in Peter Pan movie to humans like Liz. The only problem I had was that the ending wrapped up a little too quickly.

Fast read, but my daughter loved it

I got this for my 7 year old to read before we watched the movie and she loved it. It was a very fast read for her, but she was laughing a good deal of the time. Easy book for a young reader who is just getting started on chapter books. Very enjoyable for any Tinker Bell fan. Wish it had been longer, but it was a fun read for her.

A Great Book for Kids

TinkerBell is a fairy. She got trapped in a human house. She made friends with a girl named Lizzie. The other fairies had to rescue TinkerBell. The cat tried to catch the fairies. The fairies had to make a bridge of plates, forks and cups to get away. They rescued TinkerBell but then another fairy Vidia got caught in a jar by Lizzie's dad and she had to be rescued.

I like this book because it has some color pages. I like the story because it is fun and exciting. Other kids will like it a lot because it is funny, exciting and happy.
