About the Author

Robert N. Lussier, PhD, is a professor of management at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate sport management students for more than 15 years. He has also supervised sport internships and serves as an advisor for sport management research projects.

Dr. Lussier has authored nearly 300 publications, including texts in management, leadership, and human relations. He was an intercollegiate athlete and has coached at the college, high school, and youth levels. He works out daily and still competes in sports. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and six children.

David C. Kimball, PhD, is an associate professor of management and director of the sport management program at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Dr. Kimball teaches sport management and sport marketing courses and coaches and supervises Maccabi athletes each summer. He has an expansive network of friends and acquaintances in the sport management field; many of the case studies in this book arose from these relationships.

He loves being personally involved in sports and runs 30 miles a week while participating in Les Mills training. He also enjoys watching sports on TV.

• Connecting: What do you know?

• Responding: What do you think? What do you wonder?

• Performing: What can you do?

 

Part I of the book outlines these four critical thinking skills and why they are important for viewing dance performances. In part II, the four critical thinking skills are incorporated on student-tested worksheets located in the book and available as printable PDFs from the bound-in DVD. Each worksheet template facilitates an understanding of the elements of dance, builds movement vocabulary, and guides students’ recognition of cultural, historical, and artistic diversity.

 

As students build their skills, they are introduced to selected dances in each of the four broad categories of dance: concert, world, social, and historical. These categories are constantly evolving, and many dances can be cross-linked across these four categories. For those students new to dance, the four broad categories provide a starting point from which to see the evolution of the forms.

 

In part III, the authors provide specific suggestions for comparing and contrasting either within a category or across dance categories and for identifying selected dance forms and styles that present universal themes. These tasks require application of higher-level thinking skills, and they develop aesthetic values. Part III also offers lesson plan and unit ideas, using the dance forms and styles introduced earlier in the book.  

 

With Exploring Dance Forms and Styles, you can select individual dances as you like, or develop complete dance units; you can use the materials to meet state standards and national dance standards; and you can introduce various forms of dance to students in geographic areas where they would otherwise not be able to view live dance performances. About the Author

Helene Scheff, RDE, is a conference planner for the National Dance Education Organization. She has taught all forms and styles of dance for about 50 years in all sectors and venues, including K-12, higher education, and the private sector. She has coauthored several other dance books and conducted presentations at local, regional, national, and international conferences and seminars.

 

Ms. Scheff is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In her leisure time she enjoys viewing dance and theater and spending time with her family, including her 10 grandchildren.

 

Susan McGreevy-Nichols, BS, is a national consultant in arts education programming and curriculum. She was the founder and director of a nationally known middle school dance program in Providence, Rhode Island, and taught in public schools for 28 years before moving on to higher education. She is also a guest teaching artist at the elementary level in the Los AngelesUnifiedSchool District.

 

Ms. McGreevy-Nichols, who was the National Dance Teacher of the Year in 1995, serves as president of the National Dance Education Organization. She is a past president of the National Dance Association and a senior partner at the GriffinCenter for Inspired Instruction. Ms. McGreevy-Nichols is also the coauthor of many books, including Building Dances, Building More Dances, Experiencing Dance, and Dance About Anything. In her spare time, she likes to travel, read, and spend time with friends.

 

Marty Sprague, MA, teaches at the Providence Academy of International Studies in Providence, Rhode Island. She has taught and performed dance (concert, world, social, and historical) for more than 50 years, including various dance forms and styles at the elementary, middle, secondary, and university levels. A coauthor of several dance books, she has presented and consulted at the local, regional, national, and international levels.

 

Ms. Sprague has been a member of numerous dance companies and was artistic director of her own dance company. She codesigned graduate-level coursework in dance certification and has been a choreographer. In 2005, the National Dance Education Organization honored her with the K-12 Dance Educator of the Year award. In her leisure time, she enjoys taking dance classes, spending time with God and her family, and reading.

A Dream Come True

Walt Disney?s Sleeping Beauty Read-Aloud storybook is one of the best I?ve seen. We tried a shorter version that only contained the disastrous surprise birthday party for Briar Rose given by the three fairies. It?s cute, but too short. We?ve also read the longer, more detailed book that was too exhaustive for my preschooler and toddler. But this version is perfect! It provides just enough detail for both parents and children to enjoy. Illustrations are taken directly from the Disney classic movie. I highly recommend it for little princesses everywhere.

Another Princess story....

It's for my daughter - she loves it - I don't. I want a better story for her, but when we came across the book while browsing in the 3-5 year old section, there was no denying the pleading. At the time, I didn't even think of dissuading the interest anyway, I remember loving this movie when I was a child. Now, after reading it to her - COUNTLESS TIMES - I really, really hate it. It doesn't teach any good lessons to girls, nothing redeeming or moral in anyway. That is the mother in me talking, the one who wants to protect her daughters and teach them to care for themselves and realize their own self-worth outside of a man's love. The little girl in me still loves the dresses.... and the fairies. *sigh*

Pirates: A Book That Says It All

What can I say about the only children's book I've read in what seems like ages? I did love it, truly I did. The only problem was that it was so short and it took me under an hour, once I had bought it, to read the whole thing.
I did however love the sword fight scene between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner. The wit involved was stupendous and I hope to see a film filled with that on July 9th. Also, poor Jack has problems whereever he goes with women and that, in itself, was hilarious. There is a huge plot twist however that even I did not expect and I can usually see them coming. However, I won't tell you what it is. You will just have to read the book and watch the film.
It surprised me that they only came out with this junior novelization because I know plenty of fans of both Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp who would jump (might even do backflips) to get their hands on an adult novel based on this most popular summer blockbuster!
All in all, the book was good and it enlightened me on the entire movie. Afterwards, I was able to author my own fanfiction about the movie, something that would have been impossible until I saw the film.

Altered for the worst.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Junior Novelization" is quite a letdown. Although I am not within the targeted age bracket, I still can imagine how I would have reacted after reading this book: disappointed. Disney turned their famous ride into a fun movie, so one would think the junior novelization would have the same magic and humor. Wrong. Even though there was hardly anything offensive within the movie, the author cut scenes out. While one may think scenes were added, take a look at the "special features" on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" DVD, and you'll see where the extra dialogue and scenes came from. All of the memorable lines were deleted and substituted for others, which is disappointing. Nonetheless, you'll have pictures to look at while reading, so you can be reminded of the comical movie you've come to love. I do not recommend.

Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! matees, come on a pirate adventure adventure with Jack sparrow,

William Turner, and the lovely Elisibeth Swan.

Elizibeth swan finds a golden pirate madalien

on williams chest. She knew that williams ship

was on fire & that will was a pirate. When Elizibeth is

older, she keeps the madalien. Jack Sparrow comes into

town with a sinking boat. Elizibeth went to the cermony

(the ceremony is for Norington) & saw william. Norrington

escorted Elizibeth to the wall conecting the city & the deadly

ocean with jagged rocks. Elizibeth falls and jack saves her.

Jack noticed the pirate necklace Elizibeth was wearing.

All of a sudden the sky started turning dark & foggy.

in th eavning it turned pitch black and blinding foggy.

Will turner made swords & practice fighting with a sword.

jack was put in dungeon cause he was a pirate.

captain Barbosa was a pirate who tresured tis booty.

barbosa knew some one had the last piece of his booty.

so he sent his crew to find it.

will Elizibeth take that deadly risk, or will she mess up

& make her family and home in seriouse danger?

Not Reusable!

I purchased two of these books for my daughters, 9 and 4. The pages are lovely to look at, but the stickers are a real problem. Many of them tore when they were removed from their backing. Once they were put down on the pages they stuck fast, and there was additional tearing when trying to remove them. There are two images of each of the five princesses, with three outfits each for dressing up. It took about 10 minutes for my girls to be finished with the books. They were very disappointed - they had anticipated a lot of fun based on the cover.

Don't waste the money

I purchased this for my three year old thinking that it would be great to have princesses that she could dress up and change their outfits. The "reusable" stickers are a joke. They curl, wrinkle and are very difficult to get off of the page for an adult, much less a child.

Stickers NOT Reusable

The stickers that come with this book are not reusable. They not only rip easily when getting them off the sticker page, but if they come in contact with other stickers on a page they stick to each other so you cant get them apart without ruining them. Also, when you do get stickers off a page they curl up and you can't get them to stick well on any other page again. My daughter has two more stickers to use and then I am throwing the book away because it will be useless.

Have read better

I am buying all the Disney Read-Aloud Story books for my sons. I have not been disappointed in any except this one. There is not enough story in the writing. Many details from the movie are left out. I think this might be due to the fact that they used a very large and bold typeface. Or is this a "who-came-first-the-chicken-or-the-egg" question.

I gave it 3 stars because the visuals are nice. I think they are taken directly from the film.

Great movie, wonderful book!

My one year old son loves Toy Story, especially Woody. His face lights up at the sight of him and this book has wonderful color pictures that keeps him interested when I read it to him. It follows the movie very well and is his favorite night-time read. It is also broken down into chapters so you don't have to read it all in one sitting. Thank goodness for this book and I can only wait for the movie!

My 3 1/2 year old son enjoys this book, and I'll admit that the illustrations are great, but I find the text of this book lacking. For example on page 40, the text reads: "I'm supposed to be played with," he decided"--is this even correct grammar? The choppiness of the text, lack of flow, and overuse of exclamation points makes the story a disappointment to read.

Amateur sounds bad, but I am not paid to coach. This is a solid book with lots of great information, if you take the book and listen to the words you will walk away a much better coach. I think a lot of the mental aspects can be used in more than just baseball, so open yourself up and allow it to all soak in...

I bought this for my son who plays on a travel ball team. He loved this book and brings it everywhere. We were on vacation and a bunch of his teammates
were waking up early to read it. They all wanted a copy!! Great book. Their ages te 15-18.

Addictive and simple...

A friend of us, gave this book as a present to my 4-year old son. And since then, for the last 3 months, we are reading two stories from this book -and not any other book- everynight. One of the stories is almost always Snow White.

Actually, I can see why my son devotedly makes us read stories over and over again: Because all of the stories are about dreaming, sleeping or going to bed and all of them have some bare plot for giving an advice to the baby. For example he lessened mumbling about his fear of his dreams, after starting reading this book.

In addition to the stories, the fine printing and bound makes this book a good choice for children 4-to-6 years old. Illustrations are typical, yet colorful. Fonts are not too big, hence can be read by the young, after learning how to read. But for bigger children (over 6) the book and stories will appear boring after a few readings, cause not all stories are much joyous.

Cheaper than the newer versions of 5 Min. Disney Bedtime Tales

This book is my 4 year old's favorite, even though for me some of the stories fall pretty flat. It has her favorite characters, and the stories are benign. If you don't mind having to read some rather poorly designed plots, this book is otherwise charming.
