About the Author

Bonnie Mohnsen, PhD, CEO and president of Bonnie's Fitware, Inc., taught middle school physical education for 13 years and has served as a middle school department chair and mentor-teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also has worked as a physical education consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Orange County Department of Education, and the Montebello Unified School District. She has consulted with numerous state departments of education on curriculum, including California and Maine, and served as the primary consultant for the Physical Education Curriculum Analysis Tool from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Mohnsen has presented in Japan, Germany, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. She has presented at more than 300 workshops and in-services in the United States on a variety of topics, including teaching middle school physical education, curriculum development, assessment, and using technology in physical education. Dr. Mohnsen is the author of Using Technology in Physical Education, Fifth Edition; Building a Quality Physical Education Program (Grades 6-12); Integrating Technology and Physical Education; Assessing Student Understanding of Motor Learning Concepts; Strengthening Your Physical Education Program Through Grading and Assessment; and Assessing Concepts: Secondary Biomechanics. She has also authored numerous articles. Dr. Mohnsen is the editor of NASPE's Concepts of Physical Education: What Every Student Needs to Know, a follow-up to the National Standards for Physical Education and the New Leadership Paradigm for Physical Education.

Dr Mohnsen was Southern California Middle School Physical Educator of the Year in 1989. She was also named the 1997 Physical Education Administrator of the Year for the Council of School Leadership for Physical Education. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, reading, and digital electronics.

Great Puzzle Book, Great Value! A+++++

This puzzle book is great for a child interested in puzzles! Our son, 3 years old, loves putting together puzzles - and this book of puzzles offers plenty of variety. We still help him a little bit - but it's good time spent together. I recommend this puzzle over the 60 piece Disney Car's puzzle, that we also recieved - but, I didn't care for the 60 piece puzzle. It was not well made - this puzzle book - is GREAT! So... if you're looking for a Disney Cars puzzle for your kids - this is the one! And, great value, too!

Fun puzzles, Bad design

The idea of a book of puzzles is great. My son (4 yrs old) just loves this book of puzzles, and it is very easy (too easy?) to put them together, as the image on the page is printed underneath the puzzle so when it is removed you can just place the pieces on top of the corresponding part of the picture.

As another reviewer has stated, the pieces are more the thickness of thin cardboard and less like puzzle pieces. This is slightly problematic when putting the puzzle together as the pieces are less 3D to snap together. But mostly it creates the problem that the recess in the pages the puzzle fits into is too shallow, and the pieces so thin that they don't really want to stay in the book.

The front cover is an absolute design fiasco. Yes it is all fancily padded... but it is an open frame. So when you stand the book up to put it on a shelf, the initial puzzle just falls out. And even worse, when my son finishes that first puzzle and turns the page for the next one... well the 1st puzzle is basically turned upside down, a quarter inch off the table, with nothing to hold it in. So it plops on the table all in pieces. The only way to keep the first puzzle in the book is to have it laying face up and never put it in a bookshelf or turn the page to do the other puzzles. Whyever would they do this? One would think that they would put either a clear plastic window to keep the finished puzzle in place or have a front cover without a hole in it.

So, this is why this gets such a low rating. Nice idea, very bad execution.

Do NOT buy this book

We bought this for our 2 year old who loves puzzles and loves Cars so we thought this would be great for him. The puzzles are just right for him as far as complexity, he was able to do them with a little assistance. Overall he liked the puzzles but the pieces didn't fit very well, nothing like the thicker puzzles made of a thick cardboard or wood that he is used to. The puzzles are also very difficult to see where the pieces go in, the pieces look the same as the background picture and it's difficult to determine where the pieces are because they are so thin.

In addition to those issues, the pages warped on the book very soon after it was removed from the plastic that the book came in. The pages were so warped that the puzzles no longer fit into the pages, even pushing very hard on them they didn't fit. We have removed the puzzles from the book and let our son play with the puzzles but the book is junk.

As another reviewer pointed out the front page doesn't hold the puzzle very well even before the pages warped.

There are far too many issues for this to be a good kids book, look elsewhere for a better book for your child.

UPDATE: After sending an email to the company they did replace the first book we have. The second book we got was in better shape, but still had some warping and the puzzles still don't fit perfectly. Still a bummer since this is a great idea...

About the Author

Paul Pook has worked in high-performance rugby for more than 15 years. A former professional player, Paul was Ireland's national fitness coach and part of Ireland's Grand Slam-winning coaching team. More recently, Paul was appointed head of conditioning for the Russia Rugby Union and prepared the national team for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Paul has a special interest in workload management and player longevity. He recently presented at the RBS Six Nations conference in Venice on the subjects of GPS and optimising player workload and shortly afterward presented at the Italian Olympic Federation in Rome on the subject of athlete longevity. Excellent for any level

I coach a rugby 7's team & I am always looking for new ideas & methods to keep my players fresh & fit. This book gives an excellent overview of the 'how & why' of fitness specific for the game of rugby.
What really made it worthwhile for me was the DVD. The visuals really help to give one an understanding of what the author must believe are the key exercises.
Some of the exercises require equipment ( weights et cetera as well as more specialised stuff ) but even if you do not access to this there are ample ideas & systems to ensure that your players achieve the desired fitness levels.

About the Author

Jill Carter, MA, EdM, is wellness coordinator for Boston Public Schools. For the past 10 years, she has worked on curriculum development, implementation, training, and research of school-based nutrition and physical activity programs. From 1996 to 1997 she was the curriculum development coordinator for the School-Based Wellness Initiative in the department of health and social behavior at the Harvard School of Public Health. Ms. Carter's years of experience as a high school and middle school science teacher provided her with the experience to design a curriculum that encourages active, inquiry-based learning across multiple disciplines. She earned her master of education degree in teaching and curriculum from Harvard University and her master of arts degree in exercise physiology from the University of Iowa.

Jean Wiecha, PhD, is a senior research scientist for the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Wiecha's research focuses on improving children's nutrition and physical activity habits. She has been working in the field for over 20 years and has published numerous studies on child nutrition and prevention of obesity. From 1994 to 1997, as a project director for the School-Based Wellness Initiative in the department of health and social behavior at the Harvard School of Public Health, she managed the federal research grant to develop, implement, and evaluate Planet Health. Dr. Wiecha earned her doctoral and master of science degrees in human nutrition from Tufts University.

Karen E. Peterson, ScD, is an associate professor of nutrition in the departments of nutrition and of society, human development and health at the Harvard School of Public Health. As director of public health nutrition, she oversees a program of translational research and graduate training focused on solving nutrition-related public health problems through leadership, innovation, and partnership. She draws from 15 years of experience counseling and administering nutrition services for children in clinical, community, and state health care settings. Dr. Peterson was coprincipal investigator of the Planet Health intervention trial. She earned her doctorate in nutrition from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Suzanne Nobrega, MS, is an independent project consultant in health communications and is project manager for a worksite health promotion intervention study. Both her master of science and bachelor of science degrees are in nutritional science, and she has over 15 years of experience in program management and materials development for health promotion programs aimed at children and families.

Steven L. Gortmaker, PhD, is a senior lecturer in the department of health and social behavior at the Harvard School of Public Health and principal investigator and director of the Harvard Research Prevention Center. He was also principal investigator of the Planet Health intervention trial. For the past 20 years, he has researched and practiced in the areas of children's nutrition and physical activity and has published more than 80 research articles. He was involved in early studies to document the increase of obesity in young people and television viewing as a cause of obesity. He earned his doctorate in sociology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

About the Author
Cal Ripken, Jr., is baseball’s all-time Iron Man. He retired from baseball in October 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. His name appears in the record books repeatedly, most notably as one of only eight players in history to record more than 400 home runs and 3,000 hits. In 1995, Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played (2,130) and voluntarily ended his streak in 1998 after playing in a world-record 2,632 consecutive games.

Among his other on-field accolades are American League Rookie of the Year (1982), two-time American League Most Valuable Player (1983, 1991), two-time Gold Glove recipient (1991, 1992), two-time All-Star Game MVP (1991, 2001), and 19 All-Star Game selections. He also was named to Major League Baseball’s All-Century Team in 1999. Ripken has made a tremendous impact on the sport and on fans everywhere. In 1999, Babe Ruth League, Inc., changed the name of its largest division (5- to 12-year-olds) from Bambino to Cal Ripken Baseball. Currently, more than 700,000 youths play Cal Ripken Baseball worldwide. He is using the platform that baseball has provided him to construct a baseball complex in his hometown of Aberdeen, Maryland. The one-of-a-kind facility consists of Ripken Stadium, a state-of-the-art 6,000-seat minor league ballpark that is home to the hugely successful Class A Aberdeen IronBirds. Adjacent to the minor league ballpark is the Ripken Youth Baseball Academy, consisting of eight youth fields, including a youth-sized replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a synthetic training infield, a bullpen area, and batting cages.

Ripken resides in Maryland with his wife, Kelly, and their children, Rachel and Ryan.

Bill Ripken, a 12-year Major League veteran, began his career with the Baltimore Orioles in 1987 under the direction of his father, Cal Ripken, Sr., and alongside brother Cal Ripken, Jr. This was the first and remains the only time in Major League Baseball history that a father simultaneously managed two of his sons.

After five and a half seasons with the Orioles, Ripken, who would later return to Baltimore for a year, played for Texas, Cleveland, and Detroit. In 1988, he was second among American League second basemen in double plays turned (100). At the plate, Ripken led the Baltimore Orioles in hitting with a .291 average and 28 doubles in 1990. Ripken, a second baseman by trade, had a fielding percentage of .9927 in 1992, the best of any Major League second baseman that season, and his career fielding percentage at second base (.987) ranks among baseball’s all-time leaders. Ripken was voted by his peers as one of the players most likely to manage a big league team.

Ripken is the co-owner and executive vice president of Ripken Baseball Inc., a baseball sales and marketing company founded in 1999 and based in Baltimore. Ripken is involved in all aspects of the business and regularly instructs at youth camps and coaching clinics. Through his work with these programs, he has become recognized as one of America’s premiere baseball instructors. Ripken also is involved in the continued development of the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen, Maryland, and the management of Ripken Baseball’s minor league teams in Aberdeen and Augusta, Georgia.

Ripken lives in Fallston, Maryland, with his wife, Candace, and his children, Miranda, Anna, Reese, and Jack.

Scott Lowe joined Ripken Baseball in 1999 after eight years working in college sports publicity. Lowe initially served as the general manager of the company’s camps and clinics division, developing Ripken Baseball’s youth camps, coaching clinics, and other instructional programs. Presently he writes and designs Ripken Baseball’s Coach’s Clipboard e-newsletter, which is distributed to amateur baseball coaches around the world on a monthly basis. He also oversees the creation and distribution of Ripken Baseball instructional products and is involved in the development and implementation of the company’s coaching education and other baseball instructional programs.

After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Maryland College of Journalism in 1991, Lowe spent two years as an athletic communications assistant at Princeton University. He was the assistant director of sports information and served as the athletics marketing coordinator at Drexel University in Philadelphia from 1993 to 1995 before returning to the Baltimore area to become the assistant director of athletic communications at Loyola College. Lowe served in that capacity before being promoted to the position of head sports information director in 1997. Lowe left Loyola in 1998 to form his own baseball camp business prior to joining Ripken Baseball in September 1999.

In addition to his full-time position at Ripken Baseball, he has served for three years as the head coach of varsity baseball at the Park School in Baltimore, compiling a 45–19 record and leading the Bruins to three consecutive MIAA B Conference playoff appearances, including a trip to the 2006 championship game, after the school had failed to reach the postseason the previous seven years.

Lowe resides in Owings Mills, Maryland, with his wife, Robin, and children, Devin and Sydney.

Very well written book on coaching baseball for all ages. I read this book to get more informed on how to coach 5-6 year old T-Ball. This book provided a very good framework for this age group. Many well timed photographs used to describe practice drills.

As coaches, we need to be able to cater to the needs of the kid who can't catch one ball and still make baseball fun and exciting for the kid who can. It's a difficult balance but one that's important to understand at all levels.

Great Coaching Tool - HIghly Recommended

We think anyone who coaches young baseball players should read and use this book. One of Cal and Bill Ripken's biggest goals is to get young players to LOVE THE GAME and have fun! We originally picked this book because it is written by the Ripkens (and we think Cal Ripken is one of the best ballplayers of all time!)

The book is not just a list of drills but they also take time to discuss coaching responsibilities and philosophies and reasonable expectations. They include great ideas for practices and how to run games at the younger levels - we wish this book was required reading for ALL volunteer youth baseball coaches. Drills included are several for Hitting and Baserunning, Throwing and Pitching, and Fielding.

The best part of the book is the Practice Planner, where they go over Practice Particulars for each age group (4-6, 7-9, 10-12, etc.) They also tell you what skills you should be teaching kids at what age level. I was amazed at the "basics" that my 8 year old son hasn't learned yet. The Ripkens want kids to learn and have fun doing it so they love the game.

We found ourselves agreeing with everything the Ripkens had to say and we will be using the rest of the spring/summer to "backyard coach" our 5 year old, 8 year old and 10 year old daughter now that baseball is over for the year - keeping it fun, of course! We would love for our children to go to one of the Ripkens' baseball camps, but this book will have to suffice.

Each of the four parts of the text displays a distinct method for discovering how overtraining affects athletes, coaches, parents, and professionals.

Part I begins with a review of research examining aspects of overtraining, including prevalence, physiological and psychological manifestations, and outcomes. It concludes by discussing risk factors that increase the probability of overtraining. In part II coaches' and sport scientists' views on overtraining risk factors are presented. The authors interviewed 14 experts from major sport organizations in Australia to glean their perspectives on the possible variables associated with overtraining. With the perspectives of these experts, readers may identify the characteristics, behaviors, and experiences of susceptible athletes, as well as the situations, factors, sport cultures, and people that both pressure athletes to increase their training and affect athletes' needs for recovery.

In part III the focus turns to the experiences of the athletes. Drawing on interviews from 13 athletes with identified histories of chronic overtraining, the authors present three aggregate case studies:

-A professional footballer influenced by economic forces, internalized clichéd slogans, tough sport cultures, and traditional abusive practices

-A triathlete obsessed with the pursuit of the Olympic gold

-A young gymnast-turned-cyclist pressured by abusive coaches and an overinvolved parent
These three narratives, in addition to a description of Richardson's own overtraining experience, create a rich, detailed account of athletes' struggles with overtraining. Part III concludes with observations and reflections on these four overtraining narratives to further explain how readers can learn from these athletes.

In part IV, the authors introduce a comprehensive model of overtraining risks and outcomes. This model is examined in relation to other overtraining models, thus accentuating its importance as a useful, fluid tool for identifying athletes who might be at risk as well as environments and cultures that increase vulnerability to overtraining. Part IV concludes with a discussion of future directions for research and professional practice and suggestions for further study.

Overtraining Athletes uncovers both the personal and interpersonal struggles encountered by athletes who overtrain. Its qualitative focus, current research, and future directions encourage readers to learn about the topic and take action in the treatment and prevention of overtraining. About the Author

Sean O. Richardson, PhD, completed his doctoral work in sport psychology at Victoria University (Melbourne, Australia) in 2006. His dissertation research focused on the risk factors for athletic overtraining, stress–life balance, and injury.

Richardson has also been a competitive athlete most of his life. He has pursued windsurfing and rowing at national and international levels, along with several other sports at the state and provincial level, including road and track cycling, downhill skiing, and volleyball. He has had personal experiences with injury related to overtraining behaviors, missing out on two chances to make the Canadian Olympic team in rowing because of injury.

Throughout Australia and Canada, Richardson now serves as a sport and performance psychologist in the areas of performance enhancement, injury and illness prevention, rehabilitation, and stress–life balance for numerous sport and performing arts groups as well as health care and business professionals. He regularly delivers seminars on optimal recovery and injury prevention to athletes, coaches, performing artists, and teachers of all levels, from novice to professional.

Mark B. Andersen, PhD, is a professor in the School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance at Victoria University (Melbourne, Australia). He received his PhD in psychology with a minor in exercise and sport sciences from the University of Arizona at Tucson in 1988.

In 1994 Andersen received the Dorothy V. Harris Memorial Award for excellence as a young scholar and practitioner in applied sport psychology from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. He has published more than 50 articles in refereed journals and more than 65 book chapters and proceedings. He has edited two other Human Kinetics books: Doing Sport Psychology and Sport Psychology in Practice. Andersen is a member of the International Society of Sport Psychology, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a charter member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Tony Morris, PhD, is a professor in the School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance at Victoria University (Melbourne, Australia). He received his doctoral degree from the University of Leeds in England in 1984.

Morris has published more than 30 books, monographs, and book chapters and more than 80 articles in referred journals. He presents his research worldwide, having been invited to speak at conferences in the United Kingdom, Greece, Australia, and throughout Southeast Asia. Morris is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society, a full member of the Australian Psychological Society, and a founding member of the Board of Sport Psychologists in the Australian Psychological Society. He is also a member of the British Society of Sport Psychology, British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, International Society of Sport Psychology, Association for Applied Sport Psychology, British Society of Experimental & Clinical Hypnosis, and the Sport Psychology Association of Australia and New Zealand.

He has served on the editorial board for a number of journals, including the International Journal of Sport Psychology, Journal of Sports Sciences, International Journal of Sport and Exercise, and Research in Sports Medicine: An International Journal. Morris is also the associate editor for Australian Psychologist.

About the Author

Lori Thein Brody, PT, PhD, SCS, ATC, is a senior physical therapist in Madison, Wisconsin. Her aquatic therapy experience includes nearly 20 years of treating a variety of patients. Brody is a frequent contributor to the body of knowledge in rehabilitation, including a popular text on therapeutic exercise, teaching continuing education courses, and providing postprofessional coursework.

Brody received the Ron Peyton Award in 2006 for sports physical therapy. In her leisure time, she enjoys swimming, running, biking, and snowshoeing.

Paula Richley Geigle, PT, PhD, is an assistant professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation science at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Geigle's 27 years of clinical practice as a generalist includes aquatic intervention. Part of her research agenda focuses on incorporating aquatic exercise to manage the negative health outcomes of cancer and aging.

Geigle is past president of the Aquatic Physical Therapy Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and served as coeditor of the Journal of Aquatic Physical Therapy. She received the Outstanding Research Award in 2006 from the Aquatic Physical Therapy Section of the APTA. In her spare time she plays tennis, hikes with her golden retrievers, and reads.

Too Much Techno Speak

I have led high-quality, aquatic-exercise classes for the past 13 years with participants ranging in age from teenagers to ninety-year-olds. Consequently I have attended many seminars and read many books and articles on the subject but NEVER have I read a book so completely and frustratingly difficult to comprehend. I've had to wade through so much techno speak and so many acronymns that I've often lost track of the main thought. I've found myself having to read and reread paragraphs and pages and chapters just to try to glean some kernel of useful information I could bring to my classes. NOTE TO THE EDITOR. . .this book could probably have been condensed to 100, maybe 200 pages, if written in a clearer, less technical, more user-friendly writing style. NOTE TO ANY PROSPECTIVE BUYER. . .if you are looking for a book that will help you improve your aquatic exercise classes, look elsewhere.

If you wanna learn about Water Therapy and different applications and exercises, this is your book. Is Very good comes with a cd that give examples of what the book is talking about. Of course, i totally recommend that you go to one of the ATRI or any other credited organizations conference to be able to have a complete understanding of the Aquatic Therapy. Botton line I Love my book!

HUGE coloring book- GREAT!

Truly an enjoyable coloring book. I'd like to pretend I bought this coloring book as a gift for my nephew, but truth is, I bought it for myself! Over lunch periods I have a group of other coworkers that pick a page and color with me! Great fun and stress relief. This book is very large (at least an inch+ thick) & well designed- lots of coloring/game options. Would be perfect coloring book to get for a long vacations to entertain the kids. Or get this for a coworker who looks stressed/unhappy. Can you truthfully be in a bad mood when you color? I think not!!!

My girlfriend loves it

I bought this for my girlfriend, who is a disney/pixar freak. We were going on a plane so I thought what would be better to keep us occupied than coloring? The pictures are big but detailed enough for people as old as us *cough* 20's *cough*.
