USA Wrestling is the national governing body for the sport of wrestling in the United States and the central organization for the coordination and support of amateur wrestling programs in the nation. A great gudie for new and old coaches

This book, now expanded has guidelines for all wrestling coaches and can assist in charting daily drills and learning the signals and the various holds. It also aides coaches into teaching fairplay and sportsmanship amongst young wrestlers, which is important in their daily lives. A great and informative read.

good for just starting coaches

This book is a good book for coaches who are new to wrestling. It does a good job going over the concepts of coaching, covers topics in coaching that you might not think of on your own. It covers the seven basic skill that the USA Wresting Federation thinks are important. It has some chapters on actual moves and counters but it it very basic. It also talks about teaching skills but is very weak in discussing or showing drills to help solidify the skills. It has a games section at the back but I don't think that is a very good section. The section on developing season and practice plans is very generic. Overall I would recommend this book but only with an additional purchase of a good drills book and maybe a season long practice plan book (not sure if this even exists)

Pretty Good Starting Book

We bought this book along with another one for our 5 year son for husband to help coach him his first year. It has good stuff in it, but my husband was hoping it had more beginning drills in it.

About the Author

Judi Garman is one of the most successful coaches in college softball history, having retired as the nation’s winningest coach in 2000 after coaching for 28 seasons and earning a career record of 1124-416-4(.727) and 7 national championships as a player and coach.

Garman was a Canadian all-star outfielder and member of two Canadian national championship teams. Garman began her coaching career at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California, and won four consecutive national junior college championships from 1975 to 1978. She then established the softball program at California State University at Fullerton in 1980. She built it into one of the most successful softball programs in the United States, winning the Women’s College World Series Championship in 1986 following two runner-up and three third-place finishes. From 2000 to 2002, Garman coached the Italian National Team to a European Championship and a fifth-place finish at the 2002 ISF World Championship.

Garman served as president of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) from 1990 to 1991 and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1993. She resides in Redstone (Aspen), Colorado, and Palm Desert, California.

Michelle Gromacki is the head coach of Cal State Fullerton softball, one of the most prestigious programs in the nation. Under Gromacki’s guidance, the Titans have staked their claim to five Big West Conference championships, including four consecutive conference titles from 2000 to 2003. In 2006,Gromacki was named Regional Coach of the year.

Gromacki served as an assistant coach for the U.S. national team from 2001 to 2004. More recently, she served as assistant coach of the U.S. women’s national team at the 2010 ISF World Championship in Venezuela.

Michelle Gromacki played for Cal State Fullerton and was the catcher on the 1996 national championship team. She continued her playing career with the Redding Rebels and took home three national championship titles in women’s major fastpitch. She was also on the U.S. national team for 10 years. She competed in many international tournaments and won gold medals in all of them.

Gromacki is one of the NFCA college coaches instructors and also conducts speaking engagements all over the world. She resides in Huntington Beach, California.

The best yet

Last year I volunteered to coach my daughter's senior travel softball team.
With travel softball big business and highly competitive here in Long Island (whatever happened to just having fun?) I knew that I would need some expert assistance.
Prior to this I had only coached young kids--3rd and 4th graders--and wanted to obtain some information geared to the high school level.
I bought/glanced through quite a few books and was never really satisfied until finding this one.
Perhaps my mind was already geared to the high school senior level, so I was able to grasp both the basic and advanced methods advocated in this book.
I really liked the sneaky offensive and defensive methods thrown in as well as how to play both the short and long game.
This book really breaks down the general principles, basic guide lines of application and fundamental drills needed to teach all aspects of competitive softball.
It is very well written and has tons of photos/line drawings to illustrate the techniques and drills.
I was so impressed with this book that I tracked down and bought the companion DVD that was produced in 2005.
Which is also a winner, BTW.
To be blunt both the book and the DVD do a great job of making the simple even simpler and the complex understandable.
I rate this book as a must have for senior and travel softball--younger level coaches may find the vast material a bit over whelming at first.
I am sure the author has a ton of additional insights into the game and I would really like to see an advanced sequel--geared to the college coach--in the near future.

Better Than Expected

This book is unreal in the details that are given for every aspect of the game. It breaks down every position and every situation and makes them easy to understand. The drills and descriptions (along with all of the great pictures) make this a priceless coaches aid.

I have purchased a paper and Kindle copy of this book. It is a great resource for you Dad's that get to coach your daughter's softball team for the first time. I have coached 3 years and I still refer to this book for refreshers and practice ideas.

About the Author

Kathy Feldmann, vice president of membership services at USA Gymnastics, has been involved in gymnastics for over 40 years. She has been a high school and college coach, physical education and health teacher, and private gymnastics club owner. Currently she holds a brevet rating as a women’s gymnastics official. Before assuming her current role, Kathy held positions in the USA Gymnastics organization as a national, regional, and state chair. She has been a USA Gymnastics collegiate liaison, commissioner of officials for Massachusetts high schools, delegation leader for world championships in 1994, and team leader for World University Games in 1995, 1997, and 1999. Kathy judges competitions for the Junior Olympic level as well as the collegiate level. She has officiated at numerous national, Olympic Trials, and international events. She was a technical assistant official at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Kathy has been at the USA Gymnastics national office since 1997 and as vice president oversees the three divisions of membership, club services, and educational services. This is it!

This was the book that I had been looking for. As the father of two active young gymnasts, I often found the coach coming to me to lend a eye, or hand, or encouragement. Not knowing much about gymnastics, I always felt somewhat awkward, especially when the other gymnast started referring to me as "coach." Seeing that I could be doing this for a long time, I figured I better get some help. This was the best of the best of all of the books I reseached. Even better was the fact I could download it on my Kindle Fire and have it on-hand for practices and not have it look like I was reading a book about coaching! ; )

Seriously, if you are a coach and want a good all-around brush-up. Or, if you are enlisted parent like me, get this book!

good for a gym mom or novice coach

This is a great resource for beginning coaches or gym moms wanting to learn a little more about what is happening at practice. The book is jam-packed with information -- it is over 250 pages and has multiple photographs on most pages. The chapters include:

4. Providing for Gymnasts' Safety
5. Making Practice Fun and Effective
6. Teaching and Shaping Skills
7. Gymnastics Basics

12. Coaching on Meet Day
13. Developing Season and Practice Plans

I'm a mom, not a coach -- so I'm not sure how helpful the specific coaching guidance would be to a coach. I would expect that most experienced coaches would be familiar with the information in this book, though it would be of great value to a beginning coach. It was helpful to me, as a gym parent, to better understand the coach's perspective and goals in practice.

The book contained very valuable information on meets, etiquette, and gymnastics competitions in genera. But to me the real value in this book is in the many, many detailed photographs that show basic stretches, drills, progressions, and skills. I think it would be a great resource for a parent or coach who was just getting started with competitive gymastics. I doubt there is much here that would be of significant value for a gymnast who was much beyond level 4, though.

One of the best books on Coaching Youth Sports in general

I am new to the sport of gymnastics and wanted a book that talked about it all and a detailed look at it all. This book did it. It is also a great book on coach youth sports in general. Replace gymnastics with baseball, football, or basketball, etc. in most of the chapters and it will help you coach those sports (this is a lot of gymnastics specifics also). it can also apply to leadership at work or in other situations. I am enjoying the book.

Letters from rifka is a book about a young girl from Russia on her journey to america with her family. She encounters many setbacks on her journey that discourage her passage to america, and I think the best part of the book is seeing how rifka gets through these setbacks. The huge overarching moral of the story is that looks don't matter. What matters is being yourself and being brave no matter what other people think of you. This was a very encouraging theme of the book that made the book easy and enjoyable to read. I read this book for a language arts assignment, and I never expected it to be so entertaining!!! The only reason I gave it four stars is because it's a historical fiction book and I prefer fantasy adventure, but it really was a very well written book. I would highly recommend it !!! (Especially for a otherwise boring reading assignment in language arts!!!)

Classic story!

Classic story from my childhood. my 3 year old really enjoys when we read this together. Her favorite is to say "huff and puff and blow your house down" . Each page has a good vintage illustrations on them. I am very happy with my purchase and the price here on amazon is much cheaper than in the bookstore by me. There were no flaws on my book and it arrived on time.

"Fish School" is Cool

I disagree with the previous reviewers. This book contains cute parts geared toward kids, less of the adult humor that the movie contains that a child might miss, and small tidbits of tie-ins to the movie. In other words, it's just brought down even more to a kid's level with simple wording. And did you ever notice that animation movies never really cross over well to the world of short story books? People want Nemo manga, I guess, but how much of the original story can you present in a kid's book? Not much, or you lose their attention. I heart the illustrations because they are not your typical Disney- I cannot explain it..they are just different, as you can see on the above cover. It is just a simple story that definitely gets overshadowed by the movie in an adult's eyes, but to a kiddo, it's pure gold.

Plot: Nemo has fun at school in various ways. The end.

This short story takes place after the adventures of the movie FINDING NEMO. Basically, it tells what happens to Nemo during a day in school. Other than that, there is no plot. The illustrations are not the quality of stills and shots from the film, but are recognizable. This is a decent book for young children who have seen the movie and also makes a decent gift for any fan of the film.

Who doesn't love Mater?

My son is obsessed with Cars, and constantly asks to watch the Mater's Tall Tales TV shorts. How much better is it to read them instead! The artwork is lovely (taken right from the digital versions, rather than artist's renderings), the story is simplified but to the point, and Mater is charming as always. Great little collection of stories.

I saw this book advertised on Amazon and I could not resist buying it for my son. He is a HUGE fan of the move Cars, and Mater the tow truck is one of his favorite characters. These stories let him imagine Mater as more than just the rusty old car he is in the movie. This is a great book for both beginner and more advanced readers.

My two-year-old son loves this. And I'll admit that his mom and I do, too.

Seeing this retailing for only $8, I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived with the high quality glossy pages, not to mention the length of the book! Also, unlike some other Cars books, these are not the lower quality cartoon versions of the computer animation--the "graphics" of this book are superb, too, as they are all basically high-def screen shots from the computer-animated shorts themselves.

A nice book to read to your children.

When it's time to put the kids to bed I highly recommend you read this book "Bambi and the Great Prince of the Forest," a midquel to the beloved story "Bambi." The book is pretty short only being 23 pages long with large print. Because the print is large and pretty easy to read this would be an ideal book for young children to start reading. The book also has very beautiful illustrations to incorporate with the imagination.

The book takes place after Bambi's mother dies and the Great Prince is force to take care of him until winter is over; teaching him the ways of the forest. At first the Great Prince is reluctant but he opens up to him at the end. It has some laughs, action and very touching moments. You also see Bambi's old friends like Thumper, Flower, Friend Owl and his sweet heart Faline. You also see Bambi's rival Ronno who teases and picks on Bambi. After all Bambi has learned from his father he took all that and put it into use by saving his surrogate mother Mena from man.

So if you need a good book to read for your kids then this book would be perfect for you!

About the Author

Steven J. Fleck, PhD, is an associate professor in health, exercise science, and sport management at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He earned a PhD in exercise physiology from Ohio State University in 1978. He has headed the physical conditioning program of the U.S. Olympic Committee; served as strength coach for the German Volleyball Association; and coached high school track, basketball, and football. Fleck is a former vice president of basic and applied research and the current president of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the NSCA. He was honored in 1991 as the NSCA Sport Scientist of the Year and received that organization's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

William J. Kraemer, PhD, is a professor in the department of kinesiology in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. He holds joint appointments as a professor in the department of physiology and neurobiology and as a professor of medicine at the UConn Health School of Medicine Center on Aging.

He earned a PhD in physiology from the University of Wyoming in 1984. Kraemer held the John and Janice Fisher Endowed Chair in Exercise Physiology and was director of the Human Performance Laboratory and a professor at Ball State University from 1998 until June of 2001. He also was a professor at the Indiana School of Medicine. At Pennsylvania State University, he was professor of applied physiology, director of research in the Center for Sports Medicine, associate director of the Center for Cell Research, and faculty member in the kinesiology department and the Noll Physiological Research Center. He is a fellow of the ACSM and past president of the NSCA. Kraemer has been honored by the NSCA with both their Outstanding Sport Scientist Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2006, the NSCA’s Outstanding Sport Scientist Award was named in his honor. He is editor in chief of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

Text version recommended over Kindle version

I would have given this five stars except that I bought the Kindle edition and the diagrams are small even when the enlarge feature of the Kindle is used. Likewise, when viewing on a computer screen the situation is not much better except that I can use SnagIt to copy a diagram into a Word document and enlarge it to a readable but blurry size. I would recommend the print version over the Kindle version for that reason alone.
The LOOK INSIDE Amazon feature gives a good flavor of the content.
What Fleck and Kraemer do, and do very well I think, is to examine many of the training articles that appear in journals related to training. In particular they look at studies that pertain to various modalities and training variables. Often they perform meta-analyses that try to combine data from different studies that look at a single training factor such as the number of sets of an exercise to perform for maximum training effect. When they do this they will often present the data in a table where one can easily compare results from each study and compare (or contrast) the results from one study to another.
What you will not find in this book are exercise descriptions, an assortment of sample routines for various sports, etc. In other words the authors assume you have a job that requires you to design resistance training programs and you already know your way around a gym, how to use the equipment, and how to perform the exercises. Most of the studies they examine involve acute training variables such as time between sets or techniques such as forced repetitions, functional isometrics, eccentric training and periodization both classic and nonlinear.
If you are working in the field or if you just like resistance training and learning as much as you can about it, then you will probably love this book.
If you're just starting out and want to get enough knowledge so that you won't feel totally uncomfortable in a weight training facility, then there are better choices.
One thing that Fleck and Kraemer neglect to tell you is that, over time, heavy training can play havoc with your body, Dr. Oz mentions this in his book YOU: AN OWNER'S MANUAL. As evidence of this are Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger who were in the hospital at the same day getting their shoulders operated on. Even worse, Frank Zane, a two-time Mr. Olympia winner, has had total shoulder replacement.

An orthopedic surgeon who was studying cartilage and aging told me that as people get older their bodies lose the ability to manufacture enough of a protein that is required to maintain cartilage. It would be interesting to find out if this holds true for members of the CALORIE RESTRICTION SOCIETY since calorie restriction studies of animals show less osteoarthritis. Their chapter on training the elderly seems too brief for my tastes. By age 75 most Americans have arthritis somewhere. Combining information from this text which has a lot of information about isometric exercise (one of my favorite ways of training now that I am older and have more sense and less cartilage) and the American Council on Exercises PERSONAL TRAINER MANUAL which says that two forms of exercise tolerated best by people with arthritis are swimming and isometrics I am trying to optimize my training which has many isometric versions of exercises.

Also, and it is not Fleck and Kraemer's fault, their is no mention of trying to combine nonlinear periodization with SuperSlow(TM) training. I tried this and had great success with it. SuperSlow usually advocates single sets of three to six repetitions. To add a periodization component I would depart from this protocol and do three sets of one very slow repetition, but with heavier weights -- about 80% to 90% of 1RM (one repetition maximum). Fleck and Kraemer, if you're reading this, see if someone would like to do their own study. SuperSlow has its detractors, but for safety and training longevity I think it has a lot of merit.

Good solid, practical advice on how to design scientifically based resistance training programs and how to modify and adapt programs according to the individuals special needs or circumstances. We LOVE this series!!!

We own all of this series! Started reading them when my daughter was 4 (she just turned 5 now), and they are age appropriate. Not too scary and always a happy ending. One book only takes us about 4-5 nights worth of reading together. The longer ones are good too "Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg" and "Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand", but they are a little bit scarrier than the short books (more appropriate for ages 5-7 I would think).

Fabulous bedtime story

I have purchased and read almost all of these books with my two girls (6 & 4). We read a chapter a night and the girls can not wait to read the next chapter. We started with The Trouble with Tink and now have one left. Beck and the Great Berry Battle. The stories are well thought out and feature the fairies from the previous books. After each Chapter we talk about what could happen in the next chapter. My six year old sometimes reads the chapters ahead of time becauses she can't wait to find out what happens. All in all a wonderful story that is appropriate for the younger crowd.

Rather Disappointing

I was rather disappointed in this story which I know is not the common viewpoint. My 6 year old is reading this story to me and she has pointed out each instance that Dulcie lies or steals to make her magic recipe. This is all true. She does tell fibs when other fairies ask her what she is doing and she does steal the ingredients and takes advantage of other fairies' hard work. My 6 year old even made the comment that she doesn't think the magic should work for someone who lies and steals. It may teach better lessons, I am just sharing the viewpoint of a 6 year old.
