Complete Guide to Sport Education With Online Resources-2nd Edition, by Daryl Siedentop, Peter Hastie, Hans Van Der Mars

This new edition of Complete Guide to Sport Education contains everything your students need to get—and keep—children active. Regardless of skill or confidence level, your students will learn how to get children to work together, support each other, and gain competence in sport and fitness skills so that they can stay moving now and throughout their lifetime. The Sport Education model is appropriate for various dance forms and recreational activities such as swimming, weightlifting, and other fitness programs such as aerobic routines and hiking.

The text for this groundbreaking Sport Education curricular model has expanded to 12 chapters, is updated throughout, and offers even more practical examples and real-world applications from both elementary and secondary levels:

• A new emphasis on using the Sport Education model to help students reach national goals for physical activity, including outside of class time

• Review of the findings from more than 50 research studies that examine the efficacies of the Sport Education model

• More online teacher resources—including ready-to-use forms, plans, assessments, charts, and handouts

A few examples of new resources include a series of team practice cards that teachers and team coaches can use to plan practices, and templates that allow teachers to choose among several game-play performance indicators (techniques and tactics, rules and strategies, fair play, and so on). The resources make it easy for professors to use this text in college methods and curriculum courses.

Authors Daryl Siedentop, Peter Hastie, and Hans van der Mars provide a perfect blend of rock-solid theory and practical application for a wealth of games, sports, and fitness activities. Through their Sport Education model, children quickly become involved in all aspects of a sport or activity, learning skills, sportsmanship, and responsibility. The curriculum helps students develop as leaders and as team players. And as they learn to become true players and performers, they become more competent and confident—thus leading to the likelihood that they will continue being active after school, on weekends, and as they grow.

This second edition of Complete Guide to Sport Education will help school programs meet national physical activity guidelines and the national physical education standards established by NASPE. It contains everything that future physical education teachers need in order to implement an effective program. With its greater emphasis on activity and fitness, its expanded resources, its relevance and freshness, and its practical approach, Complete Guide to Sport Education, Second Edition, is just what your students need to point children in the direction of healthy, active lifestyles.

I would NOT recommend this textbook for my students
By c mar
As a professional educator, I would NOT recommend this textbook for my students. My district recently purchased these for our 6th grade students, and the interface for the online textbook is horrid and the access to the resources is incredibly restrictive.

For example, I am able to download a PDF copy of a test, but the PDF files are password protected, so if I want to make any changes to the test I have to print it out and manually make changes, or find a way to de-crypt the file.

Mcgraw-Hill, however, does not encrypt the pre-made test files that are included in their textbook package, making it much easier to make custom tests for students, which is a feature that does not seem to be available to teachers with National Geographic's textbook.

The interface to access the online resources is also horrid, and does not encourage the use of the digital resources easily.

Overall, you can get a comparable (and better) resource with another publisher like MG-Hill or Pearson.

Great book for beginner powerlifters
By Amazon Customer
As a competitive powerlifter for over thirteen years and author of my own powerlifting book, Monster Squat: A Step By Step Guide to a Bigger Squat!, I know a thing or two about the sport. Almost all of my knowledge I had to acquire the old fashioned way - passed down from training partners and from my own trial and errors. It would have been nice to have a resource such as this book. POWERLIFTING is definitely a great starting point for any lifter that wants to break into the sport of powerlifting. The concepts, exercises and training programs discussed in this book are enough for any lifter to get started on the right path in the sport.

As an experienced lifter, there wasn't too much new to learn but it did put a lot of what I already knew into perspective. My favorite chapter was the one on Powerlifting Mindset. Most books or information found online forget to mention how being in the proper state of mind plays a big role in becoming a great powerlifter and it was good to see that included here.

I would recommend this to any new lifter getting into the sport.

Back to the basics
By Becky Rich
This book offers a refreshing, no-nonsense overview of the sport of powerlifting. It contains information not just on training and competition, but even nutrition and sport psychology. With so many resources out there that claim the "best" program for increasing the big three, this book gives the reader a basic foundation on which to build and customize his/her own training. While the breadth of the book probably makes it more suitable for those just getting started with powerlifting, any experienced lifter could benefit from its back-to-the-basics approach - I know I did. The chapters of this book include a range of warmups and assistance exercises that any lifter could incorporate immediately. My only complaint would be what I felt was a cursory treatment of the actual execution of the competition lifts, but in its defense, that's something learned in the gym, not from a book. From here on out, POWERLIFTING will definitely be required reading for all new members of our gym.

Easy to understand.
By LRW
This book is great. It is easy to understand and put the information into practice. Even if you do not have background in powerlifting you will be able to put together your own program to increase your lifts. I have been competing in powerlifting for over 6 years and have trained with serveral top lifters and top gyms in the mid-west. I learned so much from this book. Even if you know a lot, it is worth the price to read this book and pick up a tip or two to help you out. I highly recommend this book to all levels of lifters, coaches, even athletes themselves that want to take their training into their own hands.

good contribution
By Leonardus Van Hal
This is a good book for all trainers and coaches. The defensive and offensive sytems are well explained and the added DVD presents clear demonstrations. The book however may have been written for USA educative as no reference is made to the use of the libero in both reception and defensive. The chapter on spread stategy therefore becomes incomprehensible as compared to practices in modern volleybal where the libero plays important role .

A very comprehensive look
By John Forman
This is a book that was put together by USA Volleyball based on the work done in its Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP). It is a very comprehensive look at the the next level of volleyball above that of individual skill, namely how a team plays as a unit. To that end I think it has the potential to be very useful for new and developing coaches, and anyone thinking about how they can try to maximize the performance of their team given the types of players at their disposal.

There are six primary sections to the book:

1) Serve, Transition, and Serve Receive looks at the types of serves available (float, jump topspin, etc.) and team serve receive patterns.

2) Defensive Systems describes ways a team can be set up in terms of both floor defense positioning and blocking.

3) Defensive Strategies looks at different ways the systems above may be employed based on the strengths and weaknesses of your team and/or your opponent.

4) Offensive Systems focuses on the different ways an offense can be configured, such as the 5-1 or 6-2.

5) Offensive Strategies discusses different ways of employing an offensive system to put your team's attackers at the advantage.

6) Systems, Strategies, and the Team concentrates on developing good training plans and handling the team will before, during, and after matches.

Each section of the book is broken down into chapters which focus on one aspect of the bigger subject. These chapters generally feature the following elements:

- An initial description of the system or strategy
- Personnel requirements
- Advantages and disadvantages
- Options for implementation
- Coaching points

The final chapter of each section (except the last) lists a number of drills aimed at working on the system or strategy covered. There are as many as 20 drills listed, so plenty to work with.

There's a companion DVD with the book which covers the primary topics listed above, excepting #6. It also shows some of the drills included. It's about an hour in length.

There's a lot of material here and I think it's pretty safe to say that if the reader can grasp it all they will be well on their way to being able to find the right systems and strategies for any team they coach, regardless of competitive level.

intermediate coaching aid
By K. Ng
This book by the USAV is a good source for some intermediate strategy systems. Some higher level components also feature but more detail would be desirable.

The visual aid - DVD has some good footage so to let the coach see how drills work from the paper to an actual setting. It is a good source for coaches when considering what types of tactics to use in a game, seeing how drills work (without the tutorial in advance, like the ones seen on youtube), and some fundamental and timing issues in the way drills operate.

Another updated edition would be very much appreciated.

While performance-based assessment has long been a staple of education, no book covers the relevant topics for middle and high school physical education as thoroughly as this new edition of Performance-Based Assessment for Middle and High School Physical Education. This updated edition reflects the current NASPE standards and includes new ancillary materials, more examples for educators, and a new chapter about assessing fitness.

This text will help you

• develop assessments and implement them into your curriculum, making the assessment process a natural part of instruction;

• provide feedback to students so they know what they have accomplished and what they still need to do; and

• use a variety of tools—including open-response questions, game play and modified game play, and progressive assessments—to measure student learning

The authors break down this complex subject into easily digestible pieces and show you how to develop assessments that will help you and your students work together to enhance the instructional process in physical education. The authors, who have over three decades of experience teaching and assessing in public schools, describe the various types of performance-based assessments and show how to implement the assessments, using numerous models as examples to be adapted to your own situations.

Not only will you learn how to develop and use assessments to help students, but you will also receive unit plans for team, individual, and dual sports that you can modify for use in your own classes. You’ll learn how to create rubrics, use portfolios in the assessment process, and integrate assessments into fitness education and physical education. You’ll also explore the challenges with traditional grading practices and find out how to overcome those challenges.

The authors provide a wealth of tools for assessing students according to local, state, and NASPE standards while helping students reach their goals. The text is supported by a Web site that includes a test package, a presentation package with PowerPoint slides, an instructor guide, and a CD-ROM that includes additional forms and assessments.
