About the Author

Joe Galat serves as the president of AYF. He is also employed by FieldTurf Tarkett as vice president of sales and dean of the FieldTurf Sports Science Institute. Joe’s leadership began early as captain of the Harvey High School (Painesville, Ohio) and Miami University (Ohio) football and wrestling teams. At Miami University, he was elected president of the Varsity Letterman’s Club and was named Outstanding Student Athlete in his senior year. Playing honors included selections to the All-Ohio All-Star High School Team and All-Mid-American Conference. Joe’s football experience was honed by some of the game’s greats: Bo Schembechler, Carm Cozza, and John McVay. When Pro Football Hall of Fame coach George Allen was owner of Montreal, he appointed Joe to be his head coach. Joe then went on to become head coach and general manager of the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. He coached college football at Miami University, Yale University, University of Kentucky, and Youngstown State University. In 1982, Joe was inducted into the Miami University Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Painesville Harvey High School Hall of Fame (along with the NFL's winningest coach, Don Shula). After his coaching days, Joe was national color commentator for CBC-TV Sports. This experience gave him the distinction of having held every position in organized football (player, coach, manager, broadcaster, and youth executive). Joe has participated in youth football clinics in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and throughout Europe and Russia. Joe was also honored as a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Wendell Ford.

Informative and useful for all levels of coach

OK, I teach at a small rural middle school and NEVER played football, barely watch it. When The Call came asking me to coach, I said sure, and ordered this book based on other reviews.

As someone with no background, it was very useful. I'm not going to be the head coach, so I skipped the parts I didn't need to know, but I know where that stuff is if I need it. The book organizes drills by position and does a very good job of explaining the how and the why, so I know what I need to be looking for to correct. I read over everything, just to be prepared, and focused on the positions I was going to be working with. Based on that, I have been able to offer specific suggestions for improving play beyond, "Good job!" There's a lot in here about how to coach, how to give feedback, and how to deal with parents. As a teachers, I found this part to be well-done. The focus throughout is on the student as a student first, then an athlete, and on how to use sports to develop skills that can carry over into school and life (leadership, teamwork, respect, etc). Again, the focus is on making sure the student is successful and not on winning as the bottom line.

I would have liked more in there about football strategy at the middle/high school level, but that's a minor quibble and really beyond the scope of the book. There is a section on the rules, penalties, etc., but an overview/description of what basic plays and formations common in youth football would have been great.

If you're like me and find yourself in a position where you are going to be coaching, don't panic and buy this book, you won't regret it.

This book is good for the person just starting out in coaching. Honestly, I only made it a quarter way through, as I felt it was too basic for me.

Brian Daccord is a former goaltending consultant of the Boston Bruins. Coach Daccord was featured in Hockey News as one of the NHL's top goalie coaches with “crease clout.” He has worked with more than 30 professional goaltenders since 1999, including 2003-04 NHL Rookie of the Year Andrew Raycroft, NHL record holder for consecutive shutout minutes Brian Boucher, and Scott Clemmensen, national champion from Boston College. Daccord has also helped develop 22 NHL draft picks since 2000. His current clients include top NHL, AHL, ECHL, college, and junior goaltenders.

Currently, Daccord trains many of the top goaltenders in the country at Stop It Goaltending. He is also the director of the Goaltending Consultant Group, which features many of the top goalie coaches in North America. He is a former coach and player at Merrimack College (NCAA Division I) and played seven seasons of professional hockey in Switzerland. He has coached at every level of youth hockey as well as the U.S. prep school, junior, college, and professional levels. Daccord holds a master-level coaching certification with USA Hockey and also has earned a master's degree in sport science. He lives in North Andover, Massachusetts, with his wife, Daniela, and two sons, Joey and Alex.

Excellent overview of current goaltending technique

Brian D'accord provides the reader with a thorough description of what it takes to be a successful goaltender, from equipment selection, conditioning, and techniques and drills. As a long time goaltender and goalie coach, i was familiar with a great deal of the material, but for a coach not familiar with the position, or a young player starting out, it is an excellent resource.
The book goes beyond the usual "how to make a glove save, stick save,etc." to cover things like the mental aspects of gaoltending, and how to anticipate where shots are likely to go based on whether the shooter is on their off-wing or short side, for example. good visual images and lots of photo illustrations help to make this a worthwhile read for players and coaches alike.

Everything you need to know about goaltending!

This is a great book on goaltending. Do not listen to the other reviews that say this book is for begginners. I've read this book many times. It covers flexibility and strength, and everything else you need to know. This is a great tool for figuring out what your doing wrong when your not playing so well. There is no such thing as a goalie that is so advanced that he does not need to read this book. Also, read what Martan Brodeur has to say in his foward at the begginning of this book!

Every goaltender should read this book

This book covers it all, and if you were to seriously follow everything carefully in this book and work it into your game, I would bet your game would improve by at least 30%. The nicely done photographs help a lot too. This book even teaches you how to improve your speed and quickness, and teaches you how to juggle to improve coordination. If you are a goalie novice to elite I would suggest this book very much.

About the Author

Jim Dougherty knows how to develop talent across many levels. Along with coaching the Hilliard Davidson varsity baseball team since 1985, Dougherty has served as the athletic coordinator and football coach for Hilliard Weaver Middle School since 1997. Prior to that, Dougherty held the same position at the former Hilliard Middle School. He also teaches physical education and was named Ohio's Middle School Athletic Administrator of the Year in 2005. A graduate of OhioWesleyanUniversity, he served as the captain of both the football and baseball team. Coach Dougherty lives in Columbus.

Brandon Castel is a sports writer for the-Ozone.net and has made a career of covering college football. While a student at Ohio State, Castel served as the sports editor of The Lantern and today he covers the Buckeyes on a full-time basis for BuckeyeGrove.com. A former football player himself, Castel also fills much of his time as a coach in Columbus with the Skyhawks youth sports program. His writing has been featured by Yahoo! Helpful (and realistic) advice for first time coaches!

As a longtime youth football coach, I invariably get a call from someone every July who has suddenly found themselves in the daunting position of coaching a team for the first time. Be it a willing parent or an enthused college kid, I've always done my best to give a little advice and to recommend a decent book. This year I've been pleased to find this new book by Dougherty and Castel on the market. It's a great resource for new coaches of young teams from pee wees to lightweights (ages 6-12).

These authors do a great job of relaying the nuts and bolts of what a new coach needs in a lighthearted tone without a lot of extra stuff that first-timers really don't need to manage that first season. This book will get readers through with realistic advice, plays and drills for young kids.

Rookie coaches seeking a more comprehensive book which addresses outside issues (like fundraising) and offers more breadth for older youth players (ages 8-14) will find a great resource in Coaching Youth Football - 5th Edition (Coaching Youth Sports) by Joe Galat, the President of American Youth Football. Both books are top notch depending on which age group you're coaching.

Worth reading for a new coach

I got this book, along with to others, because I was asked at the end of my son's last season to help with the next one. I think it was a "put your money with your mouth is" kind of offer, after being critical of the coaching. After reading this book I have a huge amount of confidence in helping, as it reinforced my critical comments and gave me plenty of new things to be aware of. I highly recommend this book for first time coaches. It breaks down practices into individual positions. It also gives an outline for a practice and how much time should be spent doing each thing. There are only about 10 drills for each position listed and of those 10 they are broke down into beginner, intermediate and advanced drills. So you might not want to rely totally on this book for a huge variety of drills.

A really thourough book, very helpful

I coached my first youth flag football team in 2012 and I found this book full of really great suggestions and ideas. From running practices, to stretching, to coaches to play selection... it's a comprehensive book. My only critique is that it was too much information. Perhaps too long. But if you're looking for something that is comprehensive and gives you everything, than this book is it. Highly recommend it for a new coach.

About the Author

Wendy Oliver, EdD, is a professor of dance in the department of theater, dance, and film at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. She has degrees in English, dance, and dance education and has taught dance at the college level for over 20 years. She believes that writing has a place in every dance course and she incorporates dance criticism, dance research, and informal dance writing into her classes on a regular basis.

 

Oliver worked briefly as a dance critic, and later wrote her dissertation on the teaching of dance criticism at the college level. She has edited three books, and has published dance articles in a variety of books and journals, including the Journal of Dance in Education; Dance Research Journal; and the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. She is an editorial board member for the Journal of Dance in Education and has served on the board for the Congress on Research for Dance. She also served as director of publications for the National Dance Association and is co-coordinator of the Rhode Island Arts Proficiencies in Dance.

 

Oliver was honored in Who’s Who of American Women in 2008 to 2009 and received the National Dance Association Scholar/Artist Award in 2008. She was also listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers from 2003 to 2006 and received the Dance Educator of the Year Award in 1998 from the Rhode Island AAHPERD.

About the Author

Rainer Martens has been playing softball for 45 years. He is a stand-out player and coach for the Florida Legends, the most decorated senior softball team in the United States with over 80 National Championships. In 18 national tournaments, Martens-coached teams have won 16 national championships and placed second in the other two. His passion and achievements in softball were rewarded when he was inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame in 2009.

Rainer Martens has written 16 books and hundreds of articles. His book Successful Coaching has sold over 1 million copies, and it is the top-selling coaching book of all time.

Julie Martens is the team manager, scorekeeper, and statistician for the Florida Legends senior softball team. Through her years of playing women’s and coed slowpitch softball and as team manager, she’s developed an exceptional knowledge of the sport.

Rainer and Julie Martens both received PhDs in sport psychology from the University of Illinois. They have been married since 1992 and reside in Ormond Beach, Florida. In addition to watching, playing, and traveling for softball, they enjoy biking and photography in their spare time.

Great, Great, Great!

The Complete Guide to Slowpitch Softball by Rainer and Julie Martens is superb. It reminds me of a time long ago in Detroit, Michigan, when everyone on our 18-and-under national championship baseball team had to attend mandatory three-hour chalk-talks every Friday night. The goal was to make us aware that, no matter how capable we might be athletically, we'd never reach our potential unless we trained our imaginations to see the game fully in our minds-eye and developed a focused inner calm that would enable us to perform under pressure. If a text like the Complete Guide had been available then for baseball, it would have made a mighty contribution to our youthful grasp of the game.

The Complete Guide exhaustively covers the fundamentals of slowpitch softball from hitting, fielding, and base running to offensive tactics, defensive alignments, cut-off plays, and much, much more. In addition, it provides unique insights into three other facets of the game. First, there are lengthy and highly informative sections on health, training, diet, and injuries. I have only one quibble with the Complete Guide. It fails to emphasize that slowpitch softball, like most games and sports, is rooted in tradition and conventional wisdom, and that, consequently, as you reflect on the text and the excellent DVD that accompanies it, you need also to keep your mind open to the unorthodox, the innovative, and the unconventional. Otherwise, the Complete Guide is without doubt the most comprehensive and thought-provoking book ever written about slowpitch softball, a must read for players who wish to improve their game.

The Complete Guide to Slow Pitch Softball Is by far the most comprehensive book on slow pitch softball ever written. I speak from experience, having played, managed and sponsored slow pitch softball teams for over fifty (50) years and still an active player at age 70. This book is of value to a wide variety of softball enthusiasts from the non-playing spouses of players who just want to get a basic understanding of the game to the most experienced player looking to get a better grasp of the finer points on the game. From the rules of the game to defensive and offensive instructions and strategies to coaching philosophies this book has it all. In addition an outstanding instructional CD is included that superbly demonstrates all of the instructional aides defined in the book. If you like softball you'll love the book.

Best slowpitch softball title

I've played my share of slowpitch softball over the last 20 years. I love the strategic elements and nuances of the game, and it keeps me coming back to the ballpark year after year. The book provides a great look at the fundamentals, strategic elements, and team aspects of the sport. It's ideal for a beginner and a must-read for someone who has played the game for a long time like me. There are winning tactics, tips and advice, and a number of drills in this book and DVD combination that can't be found elsewhere.

This 10 chapter book is a great reading exercise for kids. I bought it for my daugther and she read it in one hour. This movie novelisation for children brings all of the favourite characters from A.A. Milne's Winnie The Pooh stories together for a story about Tigger.

The story is about Tigger's feeling left out and without a family. The other characters write him a letter with the intention that Tigger feels like he has a family. However Tigger then announces that they will be coming to visit him. The others feel the best way to help Tigger is to dress up like him, but when Tigger finds out he sets out to find his real family.

I think that this version of the story is well written and very easy to read. I feel that all children would love it. Also it is a perfect one for school book reports as children would be able to write from the book point of view and also from the film. I also think that this would be perfect for anyone who has a love for Disney.

How many times have a 2nd and 3rd continuation of an originally great storyline been so terrific?

Given all of the accolades Disney's 2010 "Toy Story 3" received, we were SO disappointed that our older grandson was only 2 and wouldn't have quite been able to manage sitting still for a full feature film at that time. There were so many Disney films I'd loved as a child, that my own grown sons had loved, and I wanted to make certain that our grandchildren were able to have at least a sampling of all of them. We started a collection of Little Golden Books, and although obviously a 24 page book can't encompass ALL part of the movies, the great majority of them really do a nice job of condensing them down and hitting on the main aspects. This one certainly does, and what a perfect way to end the Toy Story series, with Andy heading off to college and his old toys - after a lot of adventure - finally ending up in the arms of a little girl who will love them. The book doesn't include ALL of Andy's toys, but you'll find most of the best-loved ones in these pages... Woody (the wooden sheriff), Buzz Lightyear (the space ranger), Jessie (the cowgirl), Rex (the tyrannosaurus rex), Slinky Dog (a plastic dachshund with a Slinky midsection), Hamm (the piggy bank), Bullseye (the horse), and the Space Aliens (squeeze toys). I'm sure there were many children who treated their toys with a little more TLC after the movies and these books! Grandpa and I are such big believers in encouraging our grandsons' imaginations, and Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 have already been re-read more times than I can count. With another grandchild due in September, this collection will be one of those "gifts that keeps on giving"!

My 2 year old likes it, So I do too.

I enjoyed this book because:
-The original artwork contained within.
-It's a very quick read. Perfect for toddlers (and adults)
-Every single page is made of dense, thick paper. Perfect for the kiddo if she wants to read by herself.
-My daughter and I both enjoyed the film.

I would recommend reading this book in conjunction with the film, as it condenses and simplifies the movie plot considerably.

Great book!

This is a fun book which goes through the entire plot of the movie, good to read before and after watching the movie to reinforce what happened. My son (3 yrs) loves this book!
