About the Author
Ron Vanderlinden has been Penn State University's linebacker coach since 2001, where he is recognized for developing one of the top linebacker units in the nation. He coached the 2005 and 2006 Bednarik Award winners, the 2005 Butkus Award winner, two-time first-team All-American Paul Posluszny, and consensus All-American Dan Connor. Vanderlinden began his coaching career in 1978 as a graduate assistant for Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he had earned his master's of arts degree. He has enjoyed great success in his career as a Division I coach with stints at the University of Colorado, Northwestern University, the University of Maryland, and his current position at Penn State. Vanderlinden has been an integral part of four Big Ten championship teams, three Big Eight championship teams, and one National Championship team. He and his wife, Lisa, live in State College, Pennsylvania.

Must read

All football coaches and fans would enjoy reading Coach Vanderlinden's new book Football's Eagle & Stack Defenses. Whether as a head coach or assistant coach, Ron Vanderlinden has worked with some of the best football coaches in the profession.
In the book, Coach Vanderlinden really shares his knowledge of defensive football. I was impressed with his attention to detail as he describes every nuance concerning the fronts, coverages, blitzes and adjustments. While reading, I gained valuable insight into each position's fundamentals that Ron explains in detail so well. The knowledge he shares in Part Five of the book, covering the fundamentals of each position would help any defensive coach, regardless of what scheme they may run.
One of my favorite points Ron makes in the book that holds very true is that as a coach you should see the daily drills you do with your players show up on the game film. Perhaps the most insightful part of the book to me was Chapter 17, concerning how Coach Vanderlinden does the defensive game plan. I always find it interesting to see how each staff game plans a little differently.
This book is basic enough for a first year coach to understand and comprehensive enough for a veteran coach to gain new concepts from. He really covers the Eagle & Stack defensive schemes from A to Z.

Essential Read for Football Coaches

I've always leaned toward offensive drill and theory books, and I have dabbled with reading special teams books as well. This off-season I have dedicated to learning a little more about football from the "bad guys'" perspective and bought "Football's Eagle & Stack Defenses" by Ron Vanderlinden.
Well I must say, I'm close to wrapping the book up and it is one of the BEST FOOTBALL BOOKS PERIOD. It is EXTREMELY THOROUGH, and covers everything about the Eagle & stack fronts, Coverage adjustments, Stunts, and run fits vs. popular runs.
There are also sections describing in detail the characteristics required to play the positons, game planning, individual read/drills by position, fundamental techniques for all 11, and goal line modifications.
Many diagrams but no filler pages. Literally 229 pages of great information.
The biggest advantage this book has over many books I've read is that it delves into the theroy; the reason behind the calls, stunts, adjutments IN DETAIL. If you want to learn about a solid defensive system, this book is necessary.
I now consider this book a must read, and possibly held in "FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE BIBLE" status.
And I'm not even a Penn State fan...
