About the Author

Sam Murphy is one of the United Kingdom's leading fitness and health experts, contributing to Health and Fitness, Healthy Living, and Financial Times. She is the author of five books, including Run for Life, which has been published in 10 languages.

Murphy is a training consultant to the London Marathon, Nike, and Adidas. She is a regular speaker at conventions and conferences on fitness and health. With over 17 years of experience as a runner, Murphy has raced distances from 3,000 meters to 100 miles and is a 14-time marathon runner.

Murphy lives in Clapton, London, and enjoys running, walking, and camping.

Sarah Connors is a physiotherapist who specializes in running injuries. She is the physiotherapist for the British athletics team. Connors has worked with British athletes since 1993 and attended two Olympic Games. She has been a competitive runner since the age of 11.

Connors is married with three children and enjoys running, skiing, and spending time with her kids.

running better now?

An easy read, covers most aspects needed whether you're starting out, or training for a marathon. Good section on injuries including how to get back into it after being injured or sick. Doesn't include a training plan for a marathon/half marathon but guides you into how to make your own. Maybe could of had more on this. Good nutrition section-more than just your regular eat this, drink fluids.. Good research basis for what they say. Talks about which types of cross training are good and relate to running. Much easier to read and includes a broad wealth of information relating to running compared to some other books I've read.

Great book. Great design. I bought this for my wife who wants to train for a half marathon, but hasn't run much previously. Running Well should ensure both her success and safety. Very accessible and informative!

A running resource that is a must for beginners to intermediate runners

I swear I didn't know this book was on the Oprah Book Club list until after I read it. It is an extremely good resource for the novice to intermediate runner. It covers all facets of keeping your body safe when running, hence the name, in a manner that makes you want to run with confidence. The authors illustrate stretches and strengthening techniques that are easy and work exceptionally well. Additionally, the troubleshooting pain sections are an incredible wealth of knowledge that assist greatly in isolating the cause of an injury and how to heal, recovery, and rebuild from the injury. I strained my Achilles and thought that I would be out of running for at least a month. Nope. I followed the book and was back running, without pain, in 7 days. Available now at your local library. I actually had to buy this book...Yes, Oprah is right.

Our kids love the coloring books with characters from their favorite movies, so this is perfect. It's an added bonus to get the four large crayons (perfect for small fingers)! We love this style of coloring book for special surprises on long road trips!

Fatastic!

This book is wonderful! There are 8 sets of outfits, one for each girl in a set. The sets include Gold, sparkles, nightgowns, simple/peasant, princess outfits, wedding, spring, winter, and ballgowns.

Each outfit is beautiful, unique, and cleanly drawn and colored (no weird versions of dresses or micolorings like old paperdolls). The colors and designs are stunning. Most dresses come with cute accessories, like crowns or bouquets.

I have no idea what people are talking about when they say the punchouts are difficult, some dresses were halfway out simply when I turned the page.

Lovely Dresses, Horrible Execution

My daughter loved punching out these dresses, and is having fun playing with the dolls so far, but we ran into all the same troubles cataloged by other reviewers when trying to actually play with the dolls. Here are a few fixes for those of you who, like I did, bought this set without looking first at the reviews:

- I covered the dolls in contact paper and then re-cut them out. Otherwise their wrists, necks, and waists can't withstand more than a half-hour of play, at least with my 4.5-year-old. The stands are even more fragile, and should be strengthened as well.

- You will have to cut several additional slots particularly for Ariel and Jasmine to make their outfits actually wearable as the tabs are blocked by their hair.

- Simply commit to losing 90% of the adorable but tiny accessories, unless you are able to still have fun with these while maniacally keeping track of them. I recommend a set of 6 envelopes for keeping track of the various princesses' items

- Write the name of the correct princess on the back of each item as you punch it out because, as others have noted, the dresses are not interchangeable.

- Cut the frills off Belle's undershirt if you don't want them to show under many of her dresses.

- Play with the dolls lying down or propped up against a wall rather than using the included stands, since they are both incredibly fragile and block the bottoms of many of the longer dresses, so the dress will stick out and/or fall off if the doll is standing up.

- Have a roll of tape handy to stick dresses on when the tabs are insufficient, and to reconnect/reinforce tabs that loosen and fall off.

All in all, this set just screams: We at Disney are willing to license anything we can to market our product, without regard to actual quality. A sad confirmation of my jaded impression of this princess factory...

Laminate and Velcro solves all problems!

I bought these two years ago knowing I would need to reinforce any paper doll for a 6 year old to enjoy. I laminated the dolls and the outfits. Then I cut out the dresses and accessories without the tabs. I put a clear Velcro hook button on several spots on the dolls and then the loop buttons on all the clothes and accessories. My grand-daughter and her friends have played with them for 2 years with only one neck having to be reinforced again. I am so glad these are still available as I need to make another set for another little girl.

Good Story for Toddlers Too!

My daughter, who is almost eight, loves these Disney Fairies Chapter books. I started purchasing them for her when she was only three years old. She loves Tinker Bell and all the fairies, loved being read to, and could sit still for long periods of time, so I decided to try her with one of these illustrated chapter books. OMG! She absolutely loved it! My husband and I would read her a chapter or two before bed each night, and sometimes she would beg for more. My daughter is now in Second Grade. Since she's been reading independently, she has reread this story, and loved it just as much as she did the first time around. She says it deserves a 5 star rating! LOL

In this story, Fawn is a master trickster; she loves playing tricks on the other fairies and is always doing so. Finally Beck decides she's going to get Fawn back and plays a trick on Fawn. Of course Fawn can't just let it go and before you know it Fawn and Beck are playing tricks against each other back and forth. Finally a trick is played on Fawn that Beck denies doing. So, who played the trick on Fawn? This was a fun story and who the other trickster turned out to be was quite a surprise--at least it was for me. ;-) The book is very well written and includes some beautiful illustrations. It is recommended for children ages 6-9, Grade level 1-4, but if you have a younger child who loves being read to, and has a love of all things fairies, they too might very well enjoy this story! We've read a number of other books in this series and loved them all.

My daughter and I have the whole series and can't wait to read each book to learn more about the faires and life at Neverland! The books are challenging enough for a beginning reader. So, it's perfect to read together. We love getting to know each of the fairies and their adventures!

Best Fairy Books Ever

I absolutely love the Disney Fairies Chapter Books, and this is one of my favorite books in the series. I collected all of the books, and wish Disney would write more. These chapter books are between a 2nd and 3rd grade reading level, and while intended for a young audience, are great for children and adult fairy lovers alike. I highly recommend to anyone who loves fairies, and cute, intriguing stories. The artwork is very beautiful, with pictures every few pages.

About the Author

Susan Kay Hillman, ATC, PT, is associate professor and director of human anatomy at the Arizona School of Health Sciences, a division of the A.T. Still University. She has more than 13 years of experience as head athletic trainer for the University of Arizona and has served as a consultant, assistant athletic trainer, and physical therapist for the Pittsburgh Steelers as well as the Philadelphia Eagles football clubs.

Hillman has served on the editorial board of the journal Athletic Therapy Today (now titled International Journal of Athletic Therapy & Training) and the review board of the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. She is a past member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers’ Association (RMATA) Program Committee. She currently serves as a home-study reviewer for the Board of Certification (BOC) and served on the Role Delineation 6 team for the BOC. In 2004, she received the Distinguished Educator Award from the RMATA, and the year before she was named Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).

Hillman earned a master's degree in physical therapy from Stanford University and a master's degree in physical education and athletic training from the University of Arizona as well as a bachelor's degree in the same field from Purdue University.

Excellent guide for coaches and players

I played field hockey about 9 years ago and recently my arm has been slightly twisted to coach middle school hockey. I had forgotten all the basics of the game and this book is a quick to the point guide. I like the pictures it provides and the drills. My goalie coach who had never even seen a game before has been able to use the book and apply it to coaching my goalies. I definitly recommend this book whether you are a coach who is looking for a break down of skills or a player looking to improve your game.

Purchased the book for my daughter (and myself as I lack understanding in the sport of field hockey). The book is well written and provides a clear explanation of the sport. I have found it to be very helpful to advance my knowledge. My daughter has enjoyed the book as it outlines various drills to improve her skill set. The drills are clearly outlined and very detailed with great visuals. She has been playing for 5+ years (club and local teams) and she indicated that this book has helped her. She also noted that this book will continue to be beneficial in the future as it is very comprehensive. Definitely would recommend.

About the Author

Claude Bouchard, PhD,is executive director of the PenningtonBiomedicalResearchCenter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. For more than 40 years he has researched the role of physical activity on physiology, metabolism, and health indicators, taking into account genetic uniqueness. He also has authored or coauthored more than 1,000 scientific publications, and he served as president of the International Society for the Study of Obesity from 2002 to 2006. He also has served as president of the Canadian Society for Applied Physiology and has directed the Physical Activity Sciences Laboratory at Laval University, Quebec City, Canada, for over 20 years.

 

Dr. Bouchard has received numerous awards over the years, including the TOPS award from the North American Association for the Study of Obesity in 1998 and the Albert Creff Award in Nutrition of the National Academy of Medicine of France in 1997.

 

Peter T. Katzmarzyk, PhD,is a professor and the associate executive director for Population Science at the PenningtonBiomedicalResearchCenter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He holds the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority endowed chair in nutrition. His main research interest is the epidemiology and public health impact of obesity and physical inactivity, and determining the relationships between physical activity, physical fitness, obesity, and related disorders such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

 

Dr. Katzmarzyk has published his research findings in more than 190 scholarly journals and books, and he regularly participates in the scientific meetings of several national and international organizations. He is currently an editorial board member for the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, Journal of Physical Activity and Health, and Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders.

The go-to resource for those who work with overweight patients

Is obesity the result of overeating, lack of exercise or both? This book helps clarify the issue of obesity as it relates to the lack of proper physical activity and how to address the problem.

The author tells us, "Physical activity is recognized as a critical aspect of behavioral weight control interventions. Typically, behavioral weight control programs have encouraged participants to gradually increase their activity until they achieve a level of at least 1000 kcal/week of moderate-intensity physical activity. This level of activity would equate to approximately 10 miles of brisk walking per week and would take about 150 min per week to complete. The 150 min per week exercise goal has been adopted in several large weight loss trials such as the Diabetes Prevention Program."

High levels of physical activity can prevent and even cure obesity. "The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) provides further evidence that weight loss maintainers are characterized by high levels of physical activity. The NWCR was established in 1993 to investigate the characteristics of individuals who have succeeded at losing at least 30 lb (13.6 kg) and keeping it off at least one year. Currently there are over 5000 individuals in the registry. These members far exceed the minimum eligibility criteria; on average they have lost almost 70 lb (32 kg) and kept it off almost six years. Analyses of approximately 3000 registry participants indicate that the average participant reports 2691 kcal/week (7) in physical activity. Men report higher levels of activity than women (2903 vs. 2532 kcal/week), but the average level corresponds very well with current activity recommendations for weight loss maintenance. However, it should be noted that there is marked variability among NWCR participants; 25% report expending

Old and not sticky

This sticker book is now very old and the stickers have become non-sticky. My kids have to put glue to keep the stickers from peeling off.

Mainly Ariel and Cinderella

This combination coloring and sticker book is all about the six Disney princesses -- Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella from (duh!) Cinderella, Jasmine from Aladdin and Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

They don't all get equal treatment in the coloring pages, which depict scenes from the Disney fairy tales. Jasmine and Snow White only get five pages each, Belle gets 9, Aurora 10. Meanwhile 15 pages are devoted to Ariel, and 19 star Cinderella.

The stickers are a little disappointing, too. Many are simply of flowers, and a lot of them repeat.

ACSM's Exercise Management for persons with chronic disease and disabilites

I ordered this book for one of my Doctorate of Physical Therapy classes. It is very informational and is organized very well. Each chapter focuses on one diagnosis and then goes into what their reaction to exercise and exercise testing. The exercise testing is not as helpful for me however each chapter usually has a case study with an exercise program. This book would be beneficial to a variety of health care providers. An added bonus...my professor wrote a chapter!

Great Book

This book is great for those in the exercise physiology/health promotion field. It gives you a lot of great information on how exercise effects medical condition from revascularization to hiv. Plus the ACSM is the best source for this kind of information. Plus the seller was got this out to me with no delay. Great job.

This is a great book and has tons of useful information and resources. However if you download the electronic version there are no page numbers and it is very difficult to tell where you are in the book.

About the Author

Lillian W.Y. Cheung, DSc, is a lecturer and director of health promotion and communication in the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. She was the coprincipal investigator for the original Eat Well & Keep Moving controlled trial in Baltimore Public Schools, the curriculum of which became the foundation for the first edition of this book. She was the principal investigator for the Qualitative Study of the School Health Index, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a registered dietitian and a DSc in nutrition, she has more than 20 years of experience promoting healthy eating and physical activity to the public, with a special emphasis on children.

Dr. Cheung is editorial director of the Nutrition Source Web site at Harvard School of Public Health and is coauthor of Be Healthy! It's a Girl Thing: Food, Fitness, and Feeling Great, a book for girls ages 9 to 13 that promotes a healthy lifestyle. She was also coeditor of Child Health, Nutrition, and Physical Activity (1995). In her leisure time, she enjoys gardening, yoga, cooking, meditation, and chi gong.

Hank Dart, MS, is a health communications consultant who works in prevention and control for the Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine. He has worked for nearly 20 years in health communication and health education, both on the federal level and in academia. He managed the education component of the Eat Well & Keep Moving study, and he developed all the educational materials for the program. He also managed the development of the popular health risk assessment Web site Your Disease Risk, and he coauthored a book titled Healthy Women, Healthy Lives. In his spare time, he enjoys trail running, Nordic skiing, and “writing mediocre poetry.”

Sari Kalin, MS, is a program coordinator in the department of nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, where she manages the Nutrition Source, a Web site that explores the latest science on healthy eating. A professional writer and editor for more than 15 years, she recently contributed to a forthcoming textbook for graduate students, Nutrition in the Lifecycle: An Evidence-Based Approach. She was the 2006 recipient of a Schweitzer fellowship to work with Operation Frontline in Boston, where she taught nutrition and cooking classes to adults and youth in underserved communities. She enjoys gardening, fitness walking, cooking healthy foods, and playing jazz piano.

Steven L. Gortmaker, PhD, is a professor of the practice of health sociology at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he has been a faculty member for 30 years. He directs the Harvard School of Public Health Prevention Research Center, whose mission is to design, implement, and evaluate programs that improve physical activity and nutrition, reduce overweight, and decrease chronic disease risk among children. He was the coprincipal investigator for the original Eat Well & Keep Moving controlled trial in Baltimore Public Schools, and he has more than 120 research publications to his credit. He helped develop the first school curriculum that proved, through a randomized controlled trial, to reduce obesity prevalence among girls. This middle school curriculum—Planet Health—focuses on improving diet, increasing physical activity, and reducing television viewing. He enjoys playing sports with his family, golfing, playing tennis, hiking, and reading.
