Great Resource for all people interested in fitness
By Carol L. Otis
This well-written and well-edited book has the most up-to-date and useful information for both lay and professional audiences. It has reliable information about fitness, wellness, and exercise and diet programs for healthy people and people with special needs. Through out the book is woven the very clever and useful concept of finding out your Fitness ID- your own unique health and skill-related identity incorporating the core concepts in this book: physical activity, nutrition, and overall wellness. In clearly illustrated text with many useful case histories, the authors show how to plan programs for diet, resistance and aerobic training, and practical tips for people of all ages and all conditions. As a practicing sports medicine physician, I wish I had this book many years ago as it is a user-friendly guide to exercise prescription for all ages, activity levels and every body. The sections on fitness for people with medical conditions is superb and has the best authors in their respective fields (Laura Kruskall on weight management, Larry Durstine and Ketih Burns on High Cholesterol). There are many useful tables (for example, the sample cross-training program at a Health Club) and the photographs show proper form for many types of exercises and stretching for people of different ages and situations. Published by the leader in the field (Human Kinetics), edited by Barbara Bushman PhD, (one of the top program directors and exercise specialists in the country) and endorsed by the American College of Sports Medicine, this is one of the best books out there and should be a foundation for any sports and fitness library.

One of my favorite books this year...extensive information yet enjoyable to read
By Chandler
This book breaks it all down...whether you are a fitness professional looking to expand your knowledge with the latest research, tools, studies, and only factual proven info into fitness and health, this is an excellent tool...

However, if you are simply someone with no current knowledge who, instead, wishes to learn how to GET healthy or how to get fit, this gives you every tool, breaks the myths, tells you how, why, and what with no mystery or hard-to-grasp reading.

I am a visual learner. My absolute favorite fitness books always read like a great textbook: easy to understand but made interesting with full color pictures, easy to understand graphs, bulletpoints, charts etc in addition to well-written text. And this book offers all those tools so nothing is left "fuzzy" or misunderstood for the reader.

It is an exercise guide but not one by someone wanting to sell a book with some "new" and unproven theory as to what will work. This, instead, is compiled from the American College of Sports Medicine so years of studies, research, and proven tools go into the teaching within.

What's in it: Physical activity and nutriton guidelines for every age.

But let's break that down...did you know that people who simply do physical activities like gardening, chores, etc daily are considered "inactive"? Physical fitness includes aerobic and strength training and the results are actually quite different for the body than mere physical activities...as outlined in the first chapter. So what's the difference? What should you be doing? What should you be eating? And how does age play a part in these questions...that's the core of the book and no matter what you think you know, you'll learn more. The book even gives specific people and their struggles and triumphs as examples to illustrate the learning and make it more interesting.

At nearly 400 pages, this is crammed full of content but oddly is easy to read and maintained my interest.

I think this book is a key component for someone wanting to learn why they should change their diet or fitness level. It's written very simply and goes into sample routines for the beginner, simple ideas into changing your lifestyle, the benefit of things like vitamins and minerals and the detriment of things such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, inactivity etc...and how all these things intertwine.

There are different "prescriptions" for children or adolescents than there are for adults of course as there are different ones for those already active as compared to someone sedentary. No one is left out. And every positive activity is touched upon including balance, flexibility, stretching, etc...not just strength training and aerobic activities.

More important, motiviaton is interspersed throughout the book because it's not just knowing, but wanting to apply it that makes all the difference. There are many ways to motivate and what works for one may not work for another so I applaud the varied approaches, suggestions, and tools throughout.

Breaking down the myths: How do carbs affect weight? Proteins? Fat? Although it can be confusing for many, it isn't the way the subjects are approached here. Because these are subjects I personally study at length, I can say confidently that the book is not only easy-to-read but MEDICALLY ACCURATE--and in an age when diet hype is on every shelf, this is the best compliment I can give it. The largest weight loss study was completed a few years ago that took 8 years to complete and is now in medical journals--this coincides with that knowledge, not a trend, or hype or unproven approach. This is accurate and medically backed.

Negatives: Although I try to balance all my reviews with positive and negatives I honestly didn't find any component of knowledge I'd change nor would I have changed the style in which it was written because it maintained my interest even when I was reading about studies I'd already read.

Balanced instruction for the serious Christian
By Nathan W. Cheng
This book has two main sections: "Preparing the Person" and "Methods of Studying the Bible". In the Introduction, Nee writes: "Many of [the books published on the study of the Bible] are very good, but almost all are short in one matter--they only pay attention to methods of studying the Bible; they do not pay enough attention to the person who is studying the Bible. They give the impression that anyone who uses these methods will achieve good results...Those who have written books on the study of the Scripture have studied the Scripture well, but those who try to imitate them by approaching the Bible with the same methods do not necessarily fare as well. The study of the Bible is not only a matter of methods but a matter of the person. Some study the Bible well because they--the persons--have learned the proper lessons from God. When they find the right methods to assist in their study, they reap rich results. It is wrong to pass on methods without considering the kind of person one has to be. Even when some have the right methods, they can never study the Bible well because they are wrong in their very person."
Nee then goes on to show from the Bible that in order to properly study the Bible, one must be spiritual, must be consecrated to God, must be practiced in objectivity and accuracy, must be of a non-petty character--not straining out the gnat while swallowing the camel, must enter into the thoughts of the Holy Spirit, must enter into the facts recorded by the Holy Spirit, and must enter into the spirit of the Scriptures.
The second section of the book--"Methods of Studying the Bible"--is very much focused on practical methods, tools, and plans.

Solid, practical, but high expectations - for those wanting to be a more serious student of Scripture
By Dan Panetti
I really enjoyed how this book began - the focus was placed squarely on the shoulders of each individual to prepare himself to receive insight and truth from God's Word. The problem with interpretation, according to Nee, isn't with the Bible itself or the words on the page, it is with the heart of man. J.I. Packer once wrote, "One of the many divine qualities of the Bible is that it does not yield its secrets to the irreverent and the censorious." Nee would agree wholeheartedly. In How to Study the Bible, Nee writes, "Don't ask what the Bible teaches, ask whether you are willing to obey." And, again, he reiterates his point that "spiritual things can only be communicated to spiritual men."

With this caveat in mind, Nee moves on to suggest that a student of Scripture needs to be cautious, focused, diligent and objective in their approach to study. Once a student of Scripture has learned to navigate with care, Nee encourages them to connect with the Spirit of the Living God who is alive and active in giving light and understanding to those who will seek Him. Nee writes, "[t]he ministry of the word is the release of the spirit."

The second half of the book moves from preparation to practice where Nee gives dozens of examples of how to study the Bible. He begins with a few "keys" to studying Scripture including memorizing and mediating on Scripture, two infrequent spiritual disciplines. Finally, Nee gives several suggested plans for studying the Bible including the examination of biblical main characters, the study of the various women of the Bible, a look at the significance and meaning of biblical prophecies, a study of the miracles and the parables of Christ, an in depth examination of biblical prayers and even a study of the significance of biblical geography. Nee encourages the reader to truly be a student of Scripture, to examine and evaluate with great care and diligence not merely to mine great truth from the Word of God, but with the end goal of drawing close to God in the process.

How to Study the Bible is a great read, but a rather difficult one in my opinion. Nee's examples and suggestions are tremendously valuable, but he sets the bar very high and his expectations might be a little intimidating for most people!

One of the most heartwarming Disney films of all time is retold with the original art from the 1940s. This magical Little Golden Book will delight readers as they follow Pinocchio's mischievous journey from Pleasure Island to the inside of a whale and beyond!

I'm not sure how you'd even begin to condense a full length animated movie into 24 pages...
By Grandma Zizzy
...but they did a relatively good job with Pinocchio, based on the 1940 Disney animated classic (which the American Film Institute named the #2 American animated film of all time, behind only Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!) I remember my mother taking my three younger sisters and I to see it at the theater during one of it's re-releases - even though I was about 10 at the time, I remember being pretty afraid during certain parts, and in fact, the illustrations brought back some pretty vivid memories, especially of Monstro the whale! All of the characters I remembered are here... Geppetto, Jiminy Cricket, J. Worthington Foulfellow and his sidekick Gideon, Stromboli, Lumpwick (the boy who turned into a donkey on Pleasure Island), Figaro and Cleo, and of course the Blue Fairy, who explains to Pinocchio at the beginning of the story that in order to become a REAL boy, he must prove to be brave, truthful and unselfish. I wish they would've included the part where Pinocchio - when asked by the Blue Fairy why he strayed from going to school - lies, and his nose grows with each lie... that was key to the story. But in the end, of course, Pinocchio does prove himself to be a REAL boy by saving Geppetto. Even though the book excluded the nose, I filled my grandson in on a little bit more of what happened in the movie, and hopefully one day we'll rent it. He fell in love with "Cars 2" when he was 3, but I really wanted him to experience the older Disney movies as well. Wish we could've afforded a collection of the DVDs, but these Little Golden Books are helping me to give him a little taste of the movies Grandma & Grandpa grew up on. There are so many lessons you can talk through with a youngster after a book like this!

Used as a textbook
By DavidF
I facilitate a workshop on backpacking and we use this book as a text book. I like several things about this book, it is modern, well written and broad in its scope. Many books just focus on a narrow view, such as gear or trimming weight, while this book covers a wide range of relevant backpacking topics. I choose to give it a 4/5 instead of 5/5 because while one of its strengths is that it had many authors, that is also a weakness. What I mean by this is that some topics are covered more than once by different authors in different chapters, and the book could have benefited from a more forceful editor to eliminate this. However, this is third time this book has been chosen for the workshop, so that tells you that we do like it.

Decent book with basics for beginners
By Steve H.
Got this book for a PE class at school. Turned out to be a handy little book with pictures. There are great basic tips in here like how to navigate with a compass, how to read a map, how long to break in boots, etc. If you want to start hiking but know that there's something more than just putting on expensive hiking gear, this will explain it to you. Highly recommended for beginners.
