Outstanding book on core development
By gt surber
The National Strength and Conditioning Association has produced another fine book. This one is "Developing the Core." While primarily aimed at coaches and trainers, this book is also valuable to individual athletes and those working out solo for fitness and health.
First we get "Core Anatomy an Biomechanics." This section is detailed enough to be very useful, but yet not be pedantic. I found the discussion clear and thoughtful.
Then we get a section on Core Assessment. Several methods of assessing core strength are referenced and described. I was disappointed that any standards were not presented. i.e. While the side plank is mentioned as a good test of core strength, there is no mention of how long holding the side plank should be considered average, good, outstanding or excellent. The pictures here do help understand the various tests presented.
Core Muscle Activity During Exercise is an interesting discussion of how the core works.
Then we are given over 50 core exercises. For the most part these are well presented and pictured. I found the three point samurai somewhat confusing. This collection is complete enough to be very useful and I think all of the exercises mentioned in later chapters are described.
Chapter 5 "Core Programming" is an excellent presentation of principles with which to develop workouts for the core. There are enough tables and lists to be very useful. The directions are as simple as possible, and well lead to the development of sound core workouts. The directions are not restrictive, but free enough to allow creativity.
Last are 11 essays on 11 different sports. These are well presented with mention of the core dynamics required for each sport, and sample workouts for each sport. These are well thought out and well written, each by a different author.
This book is a definitive reference and direction manual for any coach, trainer, athlete, fitness enthusiast on how to build a solid core. There is no fluff in this book, just good solid information. As such I highly recommend that this book be in all fitness libraries and used to improve conditioning for all sports and for all conditioning.

Human Kinetics does it again!
By Thomas
This is a great book on the core, one of the two best of about eight I have read. The knowledge about the core muscles and relevant science and studies is laid as a base layer, then list of exercises/activities for assessment and training are provided. Finally, they do what is the best part of this and most Human Kinetics books - a sport specific plan - including for the different parts of the sporting season.
I have been coaching soccer for many years, and leading offseason goalkeeper training. These core exercises have been great - and both the boys and girls are feeling the improvement. It helped that I had willing athletes and a supply of medicine balls of the varying weights to do these. Note - I was given this book in exchange to provide a review, I feel almost guilty for how much I have been using it that it was free.

Great for core work and athletes.
By C. L. Clancy
I won this book in a LibraryThing giveaway, and it was a really good read. It has good information supported by science, and a huge number of different ways to build your core. It also has a section specifically for athletes of certain sports- ways to develop the core that will help you in that sport. I thought that was a very unique addition to reading. Thank you!
