When Kenji, a Japanese-American boy, offers friendship, they discover a lot in common, especially a love of baseball. The two boys are in Frank's tree house overlooking Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, where they watch with fascination and horror as ship after ship is blown up in the water. Conflicting messages and rumors being broadcast over the radio serve as a background for confusion as people react to the emergency. In a brief historical episode, two fifth-graders (one of them a Japanese-American) witness the bombing of Pearl Harbor and its immediate aftermath. Though unhappy in his new Hawaiian home, Frank makes an instant friend in Kenji Imoto, the landlord's son; the two talk baseball, and, after watching the attack, Frank is invited to spend the night in the Imotos' traditional household. Plot and character take a backseat here to expressions of racial tension: Frank is hazed by schoolmates as a ``haoli'' (white); he encounters anti-Asian prejudice in his mother; he's disoriented by the Imotos' social customs and sees them arguing about whether to conceal their heritage. Frank also reflects very little on his experiences, with the spare narrative virtually free of background or analysis; the author does mention in an afterword that internment camps appeared on the mainland but not in Hawaii, where suspicion seldom reached as high a pitch. A good springboard for thought and discussion of perennial, increasingly visible issues. Himler provides several full-page soft pencil drawings. Pearl Harbor is Burning!

The story takes place in Hawaii, where two boys from very different backgrounds become friends during the strike on Pearl Harbor. This short story is a very good read. My only complaint is that the story ends too soon. The author took time to develop characters but ended the story. It really makes you want to know more about what happens to them in the aftermath of the attack. This book would be a great choice for teachers to read in their classrooms in light of recent events.

Pearl Harbor is Burning

This is a story of two fifth grade boys who witness the bombing of Pearl Harbor. One is Japanese, the other American. The story is more about the boys and their different families, life-styles, and cultures, than about the historical event of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The bombing is centered around the relationship of Frank and Kenji. Frank's character makes a turnaround in his feelings toward people who are different from his family. The story is historically accurate and fast-paced. It would be appropriate for 9-12 year olds. This book could also be the starting point for numerous group discussions, such as racism and inhumane treatment of those who are different. The pencil sketch illustrations are very appealing.

A Story about Friendship and War

The story "Pearl Harbor is Burning!" is about a friendship between two boys during World War II. What makes this friendship so inciteful is the setting and backgrounds of the two young boys. The setting is Hawaii and one young boy is American while the other is Japanese. The young boy from America has just moved to the island from the United States and does not fit in with the other island children. Until he meets and befriends the young Japanese boy. These two boys discover what great things that they have in common despite their different cultures and the history that is occuring around them. As the war begins the American must stay with the Japanese family while his parents help the local people. During this time the young American boy sees how it is to be apart of their ancestry in this unique situation. This story would be an excellent resource for any classroom especially while studying World War II to offer a unique point of view on an everlasting friendship and life.

David K. Wiggins, PhD, is director of the School of Recreation, Health and Tourism at GeorgeMasonUniversity in Manassas, Virginia. Since earning his PhD from the University of Maryland in 1979, Wiggins has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in sport history at KansasStateUniversity and GeorgeMasonUniversity.

Wiggins is an expert on American sport, particularly as it relates to the involvement of black athletes in sport and physical activity. He has written about sport history since 1980 and published 8 books as well as articles in numerous journals, including Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Journal of Sport History, Canadian Journal of History of Sport, and International Journal of History of Sport. His work has garnered three Research Writing Awards (1983, 1986, and 1999) from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and significantly affected subsequent research studies on African American involvement in sport.

In addition to his memberships in AAHPERD, the AmericanAcademy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, and the North American Society for Sport History, Wiggins has served as president of the AAHPERDHistoryAcademy, editor of the Journal of Sport History, and history section editor for the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. Wiggins is currently the editor of Quest.

In his leisure time, Wiggins enjoys reading, playing golf, and walking. He and his wife, Brenda, reside in Fairfax, Virgina, and have two sons, Jordan and Spencer.

Nothing beyond the movie, but very good nonetheless

Fifteen years ago, facing crippling lawsuits from an ungrateful public, the world’s superheroes were forced into retirement. For Bob Parr, erstwhile Mr. Incredible, it has been a tough time going from savior of the world to unappreciated working stiff. And then suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, comes the chance to get back into the superhero game. But, something isn’t right here, and the only way that Mr. Incredible is going to see this through is with the help of his family.

I must admit that I absolutely loved the new Pixar movie, the Incredibles, and really looked forward to this book. A good novelization of a movie fills in blanks, letting you know what characters were thinking, and so forth. Well, sadly, that is not the case with this book. What this book is is a direct novelization of the movie, with nothing added, in fact, some of the fine detail is lost. (For example, do you remember Edna Mode striking Elastigirl with her rolled up newspaper? Well, it is not included in this book.)

But, that said, I must say that I and my eleven-year-old son both enjoyed this book immensely. It has no extras beyond the movie, but it is a good, faithful novelization which brings the movie back to you and your young reader. In fact, it does have eight color pages, containing sixteen color images from the movie.

So, while this book is not as much as I had hoped, it is still a very good read, and a wonderful addition to anyone’s Incredibles library. My son and I both highly recommend this book to you and your family.

I like this book very much and think it is great for all kids that love cartoon full of action, fun,and adventure.
I watched the dvd and found the book is always better than the movie. Sincerely, Portraits by Nancy.

About the Author

Stacey A. Hall, PhD, is associate director of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) and an assistant professor of sport management at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), where she developed a graduate-level emphasis in sport security management for the master's program.

Hall's research on sport safety and security has been published in many journals on sport management, homeland security, and emergency management, and she has coauthored a textbook on global sport facility operations management. Hall has presented at international and national conferences and conducted invited presentations for U.S. federal and state agencies, college athletic conferences, and professional sport leagues, including Major League Soccer (MLS). She was also invited as a contributing expert in sport security to the first international sport security conference in Doha, Qatar, in 2011.

Hall has been the principal investigator on various external grant awards from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in order to develop risk management curriculum for sport security personnel at NCAA institutions, conduct risk assessments at college sport stadia, and develop training programs for sport venue staff. She has also been involved in several service projects, including development of a risk assessment tool for U.S. sport stadia in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and International Association of Assembly Managers and development of a disaster mitigation plan post-Katrina for the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority. Hall has completed training in assessment of threat and risk through the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center, training in terrorist bombing through New Mexico Tech Energetic Materials and Testing Center, and training in contingency planning of special events for public safety agencies through the FEMA Emergency Management Institute.

A competitive soccer player, Hall was team captain for the Northern Ireland international soccer team. She retired in 2008. Hall now resides in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Walter E. Cooper, EdD, is professor emeritus and director of training at the University of Southern Mississippi’s National Center for Spectator Sport Safety and Security (NCS4). He holds certifications and has completed training in incident response to terrorist bombings, prevention and response to suicide bombing incidents, and incident response to campus bombing incidents (New Mexico Tech University); prevention, detection, and response to campus emergencies (NCBRT-Louisiana State University); enhanced threat and risk assessment (TEEX-Texas A&M University); and risk assessment methodology for chemical facilities (Sandia National Labs RAM-CFTM).

His research on emergency management and risk facilitator management for sporting events has most recently been published in the Journal of Emergency Management and the Anser Homeland Security Institute: Journal of Homeland Security. Cooper presents frequently on issues of emergency training within school environments at all levels (K-12 and collegiate).

Lou Marciani, EdD, is the director of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at the University of Southern Mississippi. The NCS4 was founded with initial funding from the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security as the country’s first academic center dedicated to spectator sports safety and security research, professional development, enhanced training, and outreach. At the NCS4, Marciani works with professional sport leagues, the NCAA, national collegiate directors of athletics, the private sector, and government agencies in enhancing sport safety and security.

Marciani is the principal investigator for research funded by grants through the Office of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of Education. His work at NCS4 focuses on the development and implementation of a sport risk management curriculum as well as a decision support system for sport venues to include simulation modeling for stadium evacuations.

Marciani’s extensive career in sport management includes serving as intercollegiate athletic director at several universities and as executive director of two national sport governing bodies. He is an active speaker on sport safety and security at international and national sport organization annual conferences. Marciani also serves as a resource for the U.S. Office of Homeland Security on sport safety and security issues.

James A. McGee, MS, has 25 combined years of law enforcement experience and 21 years as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). McGee is currently a senior consultant at the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) and an adjunct professor in Department of Homeland Security studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. McGee teaches security and terrorism courses both at the university level and internationally. He is regarded as an expert in security measures associated with venues of mass gatherings, and he lectures frequently on this topic.

As an FBI special agent, McGee spent 16 years working in security management for sporting events, including several Super Bowls and the 2004 Olympic Games. During his tenure he was the FBI supervisory special agent for the New Orleans Division Joint Terrorism Task Force and the FBI security coordinator for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

In addition to his extensive field experience, McGee holds a master of science degree in criminal justice from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. As a Department of State Anti-Terrorism Assistance instructor, he teaches courses in major events security management and critical incident management. McGee is also the global security consultant for ESPN, providing corporate security consultation and surveillance operations for major sporting events such as Monday Night Football, Sports Nation, and College Game Day.

In 2010, McGee received an Independent Publisher’s Book Award for his true crime book Phase Line Green: The FCI Talladega Hostage Rescue. In his free time, McGee enjoys spending time with his family, fitness training, and writing. He and his wife, Shawna, reside in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

I was looking for a concise, practical and contemporary resource for planning security activities at large special events and found it. The authors' provide a well-rounded combination of information and guidance on application of the information presented that I have applied to nuerous events: large sporting events, community festivals, car races, and various university events. The references provide added value for gathering additional detailed information. A great resource for the money and useful for new and experienced special events and security planners. Other books by the same authors have provided excellent information and value.

About the Author

Ming Li, EdD, is professor in sports administration and chair of the department of sports administration in the College of Business at Ohio University, USA. Li received his doctorate in sport administration from the University of Kansas. His research interests are in financial and economic aspects of sport and management of sport business in a global context. Li is a former president of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) and currently is serving as commissioner of the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). He is a member on the editorial board of the Journal of Sport Management and Sport Marketing Quarterly and has coauthored two books in sport management. He is guest professor of six institutions in China, including the Central University of Finance and Economics and Tianjin University of Sport.

Li served as an Olympic envoy for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He also served as a consultant for the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee.

Eric W. MacIntosh, PhD, is an assistant professor in the faculty of health sciences, School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Previously, he was assistant professor at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.

MacIntosh earned his doctorate in kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario with a specialization in sport management. His research focuses on organizational culture theory, and he is a frequent consultant to sport organizations regarding organizational culture. He has presented his research at sport management conferences both national and internationally and has been published in sport management journals.

MacIntosh serves as the division chair of sport and tourism for the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada and is a member of the North American Society for Sport Management. He is the former student president of the North American Society for Sport Management.

In his free time, he enjoys hockey, exercise, and adventure racing. MacIntosh resides in Orleans, Ontario, Canada.Gonzalo Bravo, PhD, is an assistant professor of sport management at West Virginia University, USA. A native of Santiago, Chile, Bravo completed a master’s degree in sport administration from Penn State University and a PhD in sport management from Ohio State University. Before joining academia, he worked as sport director in a large sport organization in Chile.

His research interests focus on issues in organizational behavior and sport management as an academic discipline. His work has been published in the International Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship, Sport Management Education Journal, and the Journal of Sport Management. He has presented invited lectures and keynote speeches in Brazil, Chile, China, Japan, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Bravo is member of the North American Society for Sport Management and the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport. He also serves as the vice president for the Latin American Association for Sport Management and scientific director for the Latin American Association for Socio-Cultural Studies in Sport.

Very popular book in our house

This was the first book my daughter reacted to when I first began reading to her when she was two or three months old; now it's one of her favourites, and she will often bring it to me to have it read to her at play time. It's a cute little story of Pooh going to see all his best friends and it's nice in this day and age to have an interactive book which doesn't rely on electronic noises and lights. I agree with the other reviewers that the knocker is virtually impossible to grasp, if not for that I'd give it five stars as my little one loves it. The best way of getting hold of it I've found is slipping a fingernail underneath it and flipping it up.

Knocker on book is poorly designed

The storyline of this book is fine, and I like the way that theknocker incorporates an interactive element to things. The reader isinstructed to knock along in various styles...soft, loud, three times,etc. However, the book was poorly designed because the knocker is very difficult to grasp by either an adult or child. This renders knocking frustrating! Why would not such an obvious problem occur to the publisher? If there was more of a knob or part of the knocker stuck out more, something more to grasp, this flaw could be eliminated. Unfortunately this book is a classic example of form over function, cuteness over common sense.

Paris' favorite book!

This is our daughter, Paris' favorite book. She absolutely loves the interactiveness of it, and I think it is responsible for her early interest in books. (before she got into the pictures, she got into the knocker). I agree with the comment about the knocker being difficult, but at seven months she has no trouble with it, and it is a fault worth over looking.

About the Author

Amy R. Hurd, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University in Normal, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in leisure management and marketing. Hurd received her PhD in leisure behavior from Indiana University in 2001. Her research interests focus on management in parks and recreation with specific regard to management competencies.

Hurd has worked in public-sector parks and recreation as a marketing director for the Champaign Park District in Champaign, Illinois. She has also served on the National Recreation and Park Association's American Park and Recreation Society board.

In her free time, Hurd enjoys biking, kayaking, and hiking. She lives in Normal, Illinois.

Robert J. Barcelona, PhD, is an assistant professor in the department of parks, recreation, and tourism management at Clemson University and teaches courses in the youth development leadership program.

Barcelona received his doctorate from Indiana University after working professionally in the field of campus recreation, specifically in intramural sports and sport club administration. He has also worked with numerous recreation and sport organizations in both programming and research efforts. Barcelona's research centers on the management of leisure services, particularly recreational sport management and youth development.

His interests lie in three areas: competencies and training needs of recreation professionals and volunteers, organizational partnerships, and community needs and participation patterns in sport and recreation. Barcelona is interested in research that bridges the gap between theory and practice, and he has been involved in efforts to enhance both academic and professional development in recreation and sport management. His research has been published in several refereed, professional journals, and he is the author of several book chapters related to recreation and sport management.

Barcelona has presented locally, regionally, and nationally for associations such as the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, the North American Society for Sport Management, the Sport Marketing Association, and the National Recreation and Parks Association.

John T. Meldrum, PhD, is an assistant professor in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Meldrum received his MBA in management (1995) from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada and his doctoral degree in recreation and leisure studies (2007) from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His research centers on commitment in leisure service organizations, particularly seasonal or contingent employees and their impact on those organizations.

Meldrum has worked in sport and recreation settings for over a decade. Before beginning his career in academia, he was the CEO of a nonprofit organization and a consultant to recreation agencies. He is a member of the National Park and Recreation Association and the Canadian Park and Recreation Association.

Meldrum and his wife, Mary, live in Victoria. In his free time, Meldrum enjoys cycling, playing tennis, and visiting local markets.

This was a waste of money

This was a waste of money. The book had no storyline to interest an early reader, there were about two words per page and they were NOT easy words to read. I am not even donating this book to the library; it is going straight to recycling.
