About the Author
Phil Page, PhD, PT, ATC, CSCS, is a physical therapist, athletic trainer, and certified strength and conditioning specialist. He is the director of the Thera-Band Academy.
Page has worked with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks and athletic teams at Tulane University and LSU. He has lectured internationally on the scientific and clinical use of elastic resistance and developed an educational course on elastic resistance that is being taught in over 30 countries.
He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and was awarded the NATA’s Otho Davis Postgraduate Scholarship in 1991. He is the coauthor of two other textbooks, including The Scientific and Clinical Application of Elastic Resistance.
Page lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with his wife and four children.
Todd S. Ellenbecker, DPT, MS, PT, SCS, OCS, CSCS, is the clinic director at Physiotherapy Associates Scottsdale Sports Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, and is the director of sports medicine for the ATP World Tour. A licensed physical therapist, he has researched and taught in the field for 18 years.
Ellenbecker is certified by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as both a sports clinical specialist and orthopedic clinical specialist. The APTA also honored him with its Sports Physical Therapy Clinical Teaching Award in 1999. He was chairman of the APTA’s Shoulder Special Interest Group and is a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and American Journal of Sports Medicine.
Ellenbecker is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In 2003, the NSCA named him the Sports Medicine Professional of the Year. He also serves as chairman of the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) National Sport Science Committee.
Ellenbecker lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife, Gail.

Fitness experts show you how to get fit with strength bands

I'm a big fan of strength band training and I find this new book to be the best there is for those who need to know all there is about elastic resistance training (ERT).
Here are the contents of the book:

The first section introduces the reader to ERT. It also compares it to free weights and machines. It gives you the pros and cons of each.
I like ERT for lots of reasons. One is it's safer in most cases than other forms of resistance training. You don't need a spotter and the chances of injury are far less. Moreover, I get every bit as good a workout as with weights.
The photos are black and white but they're large and they show you exactly how to do each exercise. There is also an explanation of the exercise. You can see the muscle or muscles that are worked. There are over 150 exercises for strength, power and stability in the book.
Exercises using both the Dyna band and rubber tubing are shown. In general the authors suggest you use tubing for the upper body and the bands for the lower body. I find that to be best in my own workout routine.
The authors suggest when you want to build muscle and power you use heavier resistance and when you want to lose weight you use lighter resistance and more reps.
Each page shows you an exercise and tells you what muscles it works. Then you get brief instructions, a variation and training tips. Then the photos showing the exercise. I find the layout excellent and I love the training tips.
I wish the book was spiral bound so you could lay it on the floor or a table when you work out. I also wish it had an index so you could quickly find certain exercises.
Strength band training will give you power and endurance. It will help you function in your daily life and also in any sports in which you participate.
You can incorporate strength band training with your other training or use it alone. But if you use strength bands, you need this book.

The perfect way to do the perfect workout if you are on the go or want to reach muscles you might not otherwise

Strength bands are one of those new workout routines that, unlike most, actually gained momentum after being introduced rather than becoming a fad. For me, it seems obvious as to why this is...I personally love that they can be utilized to reach muscles that you might not otherwise hit in a home gym especially due to their versatility. And, unlike weights where you only have resistance in one direction (lifting) resistance bands or strength bands offer muscle resistance when lifting and retracting them so you often get twice the workout in half the time.
Couple that with the fact that the equipment couldn't be any lighter or easier to store which means you can throw a band in your suitcase to travel, keep one in your desk at work, under the couch to use while watching tv, etc and you have a pretty convenient workout anywhere, anytime it works for you.
However, in spite of my having a crazy vast DVD and Wii fitness library, only a few of them utilize the bands, while most use hand weights. Because of this, mastering the moves on my own and on the go seemed best utilized with a pictorial guide. And that's where this book came in.
So let me go over what I loved and some minor things I'd change if I could. Almost everything I loved...First, there are over 150 exercises in the book so even with the ones I won't utilize (I'll get to that in a minute) it's still a vast book with details and photos that fill all of its 213 pages.
It has sports specific workouts. For example, if you want to perform with more power and speed at running, jumping, swinging, kicking etc, you will find the moves to help you as a runner, a basketball player, a tennis ace, a soccer player etc...There are specific moves shown for sports players to help them swing better, etc. While I do not perform a certain sport myself but simply try to stay in shape with a well-rounded routine, this still helps ensure I am working varied muscles that lead to overall fitness.
Want to concentrate on specific body parts? You can also do that...as specific as back exercises, knee exercises, etc. If you hate your hips and want more concentration there, you can pick the ones that work best for you.
While I have little time to read a book lately, this breaks the moves down so that you don't have to. It's a pictorial guide with short explanations so you can just jump right in. However, if you want to really learn, there are full guides and pictures as to what muscles you are working, what color band has the most resistance with a chart all the way down to the least resistance color (all bands are color coded)
Here's what I'd change: The pics are all black and white. On a few shots that made it hard for me to see just how they wrapped the band as it blends a bit with the leg color, but it was just very few pics that I had issue with. Secondly, the use of equipment in many of moves. Many of us use resistance bands because it replaces a gym yet many of the moves would be ones you would need a gym for. There are some shots with barbells and benches and vertical bars (a freestanding push up machine that has a bar at the top and bottom, and two metal bars on the sides) and steps. I actually tried to figure out what I could use as a vertical bar and while I could tie my bands on the handle of my elliptical for a couple moves, because it required tying them at different heights for different moves, many I just wasn't able to do without greater equipment.
I suggest you have two types of bands for these workouts: the theraband which is thick and a closed circle like a rubberband, as well as a either a band with handles on each end or a plain band strip that isn't closed like the theraband and allows you to hold each end. If you had to pick one of the two, you can do most all without that theraband...most are for the regular stretch band that is used either with handles or without and is just a stretchy strip.
This will also provide stretches with the band if you wish to utilize it for those as well.
All instructions are simple, brief and easy to follow.
Conclusion: For someone with a bit more gym equipment than myself, the book would be flawless. For someone with a limited home gym wanting to use the bands to REPLACE all the heavier stuff, you will be able to pick out many, many moves to help you but you need to be aware going in that the full range of workouts may require a few items you may or may not be able to improvise another object to take it's place. That said, using this at a gym would allow you to hit muscles you wouldn't with simply their weights and using it as a trainer would be excellent as you'd have more access to the items that would allow you to do every move in the book and do it and teach it correctly. For my home gym that is outfitted with just a few items, I had to skip over some things, but it did help me utilize the bands in ways I hadn't in the past and for that, it was worth the value.
Note: Because some books or DVDs do come with bands, you should know this one is a manual to teach you how to use them buy you'll need to find your own bands--either on Amazon, a sports store, Walmart, etc.
Suggestion: SWAT workout Rapid Tone and Firm is a DVD on Amazon that comes with a band which is where I got one of mine and I like that workout too.

Not at all what I expected....

First I will say that some of the exercises in this book are good. What my problem is that 98% of the exercises are shown using gym equipment. I bought this thinking it would be for a home workout person or for people who exercise on the road. These are some of the basic perks of band use. Plus they devote basically all of the book except for maybe five exercises to the flat bands rather than the tube bands. I wish I could have returned this book. I wish I could see a better example in the other books so I don't buy another old fashioned book like this one. If you want to use flat bands in the gym, this is the book for you! Anyone else....stay away....spend your money elsewhere.
